Anguilla is a British Overseas Territory located at the northern end of the Leeward Islands in the Lesser Antilles. Small and mostly flat, the island is formed largely of limestone and coral and covers roughly 91–96 square kilometers, with about 61 kilometers of coastline. Its area is comparable to that of Washington, D.C., making Anguilla one of the smallest territories in the Americas. The island's Indigenous name was Malliouhana, meaning a sea serpent shaped like an arc. English explorers later gave it the name Anguilla because of its long, narrow shape, which resembles an eel. Political Status and History The island was colonized by the English in 1650. In 1967, it was administratively combined with Saint Kitts and Nevis, a political arrangement strongly rejected by many Anguillans who maintained a distinct local identity. The dispute eventually led to Anguilla becoming a self-governing dependency of the United Kingdom, a status it retains today as a British Overseas Territory. Tourism is the main pillar of the economy, alongside boat building, offshore financial services, and smaller exports such as lobster, fish, and rum. |

A Remarkably Short Commercial Flight The flight between The Valley, Anguilla's capital, and the neighboring island of Saint Martin is considered one of the shortest commercial air routes in the world. The journey takes less than ten minutes and is operated by Anguilla Air Services using Britten-Norman Islander aircraft. The flight is so brief that there is no onboard service. Another distinctive symbol of the island is its flag, which features three dolphins arranged in a circle against a turquoise background, representing endurance, unity, and strength. Beaches and Island Activities Anguilla has 33 beaches, an impressive number for an island of its size. Among the best known are Rendezvous Bay, with its long, gently curving shoreline; Shoal Bay, lined with beachfront restaurants and bars; Sandy Ground, the island's livelier social center, known for music, dancing, and boat races; and the more secluded Little Bay. Traditional sailing remains an important part of Anguillan culture, while diving, snorkeling, and boat trips to nearby cays are popular with visitors. The island has also developed a reputation for attracting travelers seeking privacy and upscale accommodation. Luxury resorts and villas dominate much of the high-end market, although mid-range lodging is available for travelers with different budgets. |

Local Food and Island Culture Anguillan cuisine combines Caribbean traditions with British and French influences. One of the island's characteristic dishes is stew fish, prepared by slowly cooking fish in a rich, seasoned sauce. Seafood is central to the local table, reflecting Anguilla's maritime heritage. Music is also closely connected to island life. Calypso and reggae are part of the local soundscape, particularly in the beach bars and social venues around Sandy Ground and Shoal Bay, where evenings often combine live music, food, and the relaxed atmosphere for which Anguilla is known. | Getting There, Staying There, and When to Visit Anguilla does not have major long-haul international service. Most international visitors arrive through neighboring Saint Martin, using Princess Juliana International Airport and then continuing to Anguilla by a short connecting flight or ferry. The ferry crossing generally takes about 20 to 25 minutes, depending on the service and conditions. The island has a tropical climate moderated by trade winds, with average temperatures around 27°C throughout the year. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November, although sunny weather remains common even during these months. Travelers should also be aware that some hotels and resorts close temporarily during the low season, particularly around September. Accommodation ranges from luxury villas and resorts, which are strongly associated with Anguilla's tourism identity, to more moderately priced hotels and guesthouses. Prices tend to be higher than in many Caribbean destinations of similar size, reflecting the island's positioning as a relatively exclusive destination. | Practical Tips Because Anguilla has a smaller tourism infrastructure than many larger Caribbean islands, travelers should reserve accommodation, activities, and transfers from Saint Martin in advance, especially during the high season from December through April. The official currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar, although U.S. dollars are widely accepted throughout the tourism sector. Renting a vehicle can also be useful for exploring the island's beaches and smaller communities beyond The Valley and the main resort areas.
