In the Caribbean, few islands have exported as much culture relative to their size as Jamaica. Covering about 10,990 square kilometers, the island is the third-largest in the Caribbean and the birthplace of reggae, Bob Marley, and a musical identity recognized around the world. Located south of Cuba, Jamaica combines the Blue Mountains in the east with a northern coast known for beaches and a southern coast that is generally more rugged and less developed for tourism. Jamaica became independent from Britain on August 6, 1962, after almost three centuries of British rule that began in 1655. Before European colonization, the island was inhabited by the Taíno. English is the official language, while Jamaican Patois is widely spoken in everyday life. The Creole language, shaped by English and African linguistic influences, is an important part of Jamaican identity. |

Between Reggae and Spy Films Kingston, the capital, is the country's cultural center. The city includes Trench Town, where Bob Marley spent part of his youth, and the Bob Marley Museum, located in his former home on Hope Road. Visitors can also follow his story to Nine Mile in St. Ann Parish, his birthplace and the location of his mausoleum. Jamaica also has an unexpected connection with popular cinema through the James Bond franchise. The first film, Dr. No (1962), was filmed extensively on the island, including the famous scene in which Ursula Andress emerges from the sea at Laughing Waters Beach. Live and Let Die (1973) later used Jamaican locations, while Cocktail (1988), starring Tom Cruise, also filmed scenes in the Montego Bay area. These connections have added another layer to the island's international cultural identity. |

The North Coast: Waterfalls, Rivers, and Reefs One of Jamaica's best-known natural attractions is Dunn's River Falls, a 55-meter-high cascade stretching about 180 meters in Ocho Rios. Visitors can climb the falls in groups, usually accompanied by guides, following the natural terraces of the watercourse. Because the attraction is closely connected to the cruise industry, visitor numbers can be particularly high when several ships arrive in port. Travelers seeking a quieter experience can check cruise schedules and arrive early in the day. Other popular activities include bamboo rafting on the Martha Brae or Great River and excursions to Jamaica's bioluminescent lagoons around Trelawny and Falmouth. After dark, microscopic organisms in the water can produce a blue-green glow when disturbed, creating one of the island's more unusual natural experiences. | What to Eat in Jamaica Jerk chicken is one of the island's most recognizable dishes. Traditionally marinated with a blend of spices and cooked over pimento wood, it is often served with rice and peas. Jamaica's national dish, however, is ackee and saltfish, combining the fruit of the ackee tree with salted cod and accompanying vegetables and seasonings. Jamaica is also internationally known for Blue Mountain coffee, grown at high elevations in the eastern part of the island. For travelers, food costs vary considerably by setting: local and street-food meals can be relatively inexpensive, while restaurants in major resort areas are considerably more expensive. | Planning the Trip Jamaica has two international airports: Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston and Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay. Sangster is particularly important for leisure tourism because of its proximity to major resort areas, including Montego Bay, Negril, and Ocho Rios. Travelers moving between destinations commonly use private transfers, taxis, or organized excursions, while public transportation is more limited outside the main urban areas. Accommodation ranges from guesthouses and villas to large all-inclusive resorts, a particularly important part of Jamaica's tourism sector. Prices vary significantly according to location, property type, and season. The drier period from December through April is generally popular with visitors, while the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November, with tropical activity typically increasing later in the season. Practical Considerations Travelers should arrange transportation and excursions through established operators or reputable accommodations, particularly in busy resort destinations such as Montego Bay and Ocho Rios. The official currency is the Jamaican dollar, although U.S. dollars are widely accepted in many tourism-oriented businesses. Jamaica's combination of music, cultural history, beaches, mountains, waterfalls, food, and film heritage makes the island more than a conventional Caribbean resort destination.
