Cape Froward: Protecting Patagonia’s Last Wild Frontier

Chile Advances in Establishing a New National Park at the Southern Tip of South America

Cape Froward, located at the southernmost point of the Brunswick Peninsula in Chile, is poised to become one of the continent’s most important conservation areas. This remote region, facing the Strait of Magellan, is renowned for its windswept landscapes, subantarctic forests, and rich biodiversity.

The proposed national park covers over 150,000 hectares, including forests, wetlands, mountains, rivers, and coastal habitats. It is home to emblematic species such as the puma, Magellanic woodpecker, huillín (native otter), and the endangered huemul deer, one of Chile’s national symbols.

Recent studies have confirmed the presence of huemul populations within the park boundaries, reinforcing the importance of protecting these areas. Globally, fewer than 1,500 huemuls remain in the wild, making protected territories like Cape Froward critical for their survival.

Marine ecosystems in the area are equally vital. The Strait of Magellan supports humpback whales, southern dolphins, sea lions, and numerous seabird species, creating a unique interface between terrestrial and marine habitats that is essential for scientific research and conservation.

The park initiative is the result of a collaboration between the Chilean government and private conservation organizations. Rewilding Chile, inspired by the legacy of Douglas and Kristine Tompkins, contributed over 127,000 hectares of land for incorporation into the national park system.

This partnership model, where private organizations acquire and restore land before donating it to the state, has proven effective in protecting Patagonian ecosystems over the past decades.

Once officially established, Cape Froward will become Chile’s 47th national park, further strengthening the country’s protected areas network and its commitment to international biodiversity targets.

The park will also be part of a larger ecological corridor connecting multiple protected areas across southern Chile, enabling species to migrate and maintain genetic diversity in response to climate change.

Beyond its ecological value, Cape Froward carries a rich human history. It was traditionally inhabited by the Kawésqar people, nomadic navigators of the southern channels. European explorers later passed through these waters, and today, the Cruz de los Mares marks the southernmost continental point of South America.

The area also presents opportunities for sustainable tourism, including trekking, camping, and educational centers designed to minimize environmental impact while promoting visitor engagement with nature.

For Chile and the global community, Cape Froward represents one of the last unspoiled landscapes of South America—a place where wilderness, biodiversity, and cultural heritage converge, offering lessons in conservation for the planet.
