Zacatecas rose from the discovery of rich silver deposits in 1546 to become one of the most prosperous mining centers of New Spain. Built across the steep slopes of a narrow valley between Cerro de la Bufa and Cerro del Grillo, the city developed around the wealth generated underground. Today, that history remains visible in its churches, mansions, plazas, narrow streets, and buildings constructed from the distinctive pink volcanic stone known as cantera rosa. The Historic Centre of Zacatecas was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993. Its remarkable combination of religious and civic architecture reflects the wealth generated by silver mining during the 16th and 17th centuries, while its Baroque buildings reveal a fascinating meeting of European and Indigenous decorative traditions. Mina El Edén began operating in 1586 and remained active for almost four centuries before closing in 1960.
