Greenland

The World's Largest Island Where Icebergs, Fjords, and Arctic Wilderness Define the Ultimate Polar Adventure

By Heydi Bernal for Ruta Pantera on 8/8/2026 2:53:39 PM

If there is one destination where nature still reigns almost untouched, it is Greenland. Covering more than two million square kilometers between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans, the world's largest island offers travelers a landscape dominated by colossal glaciers, deep fjords, towering mountains, colorful coastal villages, and one of the planet's most spectacular displays of Arctic wildlife. Despite its immense size, Greenland is home to fewer than 60,000 residents, making it one of the least densely populated places on Earth. For those seeking dramatic scenery, authentic Inuit culture, and unforgettable polar adventures, Greenland represents one of the last great frontiers of travel.
An Arctic Land Shaped by Ice and Inuit Heritage

Approximately 80 percent of Greenland is covered by the Greenland Ice Sheet, the second-largest body of ice on Earth after Antarctica. In some locations, the ice reaches more than 3,000 meters (9,800 feet) in thickness and has shaped the island's dramatic landscape for hundreds of thousands of years. Massive glaciers slowly flow toward the coast, calving enormous icebergs that drift through the surrounding fjords and into the North Atlantic.

Although Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, its culture is deeply rooted in Inuit traditions that have flourished in the Arctic for centuries. Fishing, hunting, dog sledding, and a profound connection with nature remain essential parts of daily life in many communities. Visitors have the opportunity to experience this unique heritage through local museums, cultural centers, traditional cuisine, and guided excursions led by Greenlandic residents.
Some of Greenland's most remarkable destinations include Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its enormous icebergs produced by the fast-moving Sermeq Kujalleq Glacier; Disko Bay, where whales and floating ice create unforgettable scenery; Nuuk, the colorful capital blending modern Nordic life with Inuit traditions; East Greenland's remote Scoresby Sund, the world's largest fjord system; and the dramatic mountains surrounding Tasermiut Fjord in southern Greenland, often compared to the landscapes of Patagonia.
A Land of Icebergs, Northern Lights, and Endless Summer Days

Greenland offers dramatically different experiences depending on the season. Summer, from June through August, brings temperatures generally ranging from 5°C to 15°C (41°F to 59°F), long daylight hours, excellent hiking conditions, whale watching, and boat excursions among the icebergs. During the Arctic winter, temperatures fall well below freezing, creating ideal conditions for dog sledding, snowmobiling, and viewing the Northern Lights dancing across some of the world's darkest skies.

Popular activities include glacier hiking, iceberg cruises, kayaking through pristine fjords, whale watching, fishing, mountain trekking, helicopter sightseeing flights, and cultural visits to Inuit settlements. Depending on the region, travelers may also witness the Midnight Sun during summer, when daylight continues nearly around the clock above the Arctic Circle.

Greenland's wildlife is among the richest in the Arctic. Visitors frequently encounter humpback, fin, and minke whales during the summer months, while musk oxen, Arctic foxes, reindeer, Arctic hares, seals, and occasionally polar bears inhabit different parts of the island. Birdlife includes puffins, white-tailed eagles, kittiwakes, and numerous seabird colonies that flourish along the rugged coastline.

Dining highlights feature fresh seafood including Greenland halibut, Arctic char, snow crab, shrimp, and locally harvested mussels. Traditional specialties may also include musk ox and reindeer. Restaurant meals generally range from USD 25 to USD 60, while fine dining establishments in Nuuk can be more expensive. Accommodations vary from guesthouses beginning around USD 120 per night to boutique hotels and luxury lodges exceeding USD 400, particularly during the short summer season.
Getting There and What to Expect

Most international travelers reach Greenland via flights from Copenhagen, Denmark, or Reykjavik, Iceland, with major gateways including Nuuk Airport (GOH), Ilulissat Airport (JAV), and Kangerlussuaq Airport (SFJ). Because there are very few roads connecting communities, domestic travel is typically by aircraft, helicopter, or seasonal ferry services operated along the coast.

Most visitors spend between seven and fourteen days exploring Greenland, often combining Nuuk, Ilulissat, and Disko Bay with guided excursions into the surrounding wilderness. Adventure travelers may also venture to East Greenland or the far north for even more remote Arctic expeditions, where towering glaciers, untouched mountains, and vast expanses of ice create some of the most spectacular landscapes anywhere on Earth.

Greenland is far more than an Arctic destination—it is one of the last places where nature still dictates the rhythm of life. From immense glaciers and brilliant blue icebergs to ancient Inuit traditions and extraordinary wildlife, every journey across this frozen island offers a powerful reminder of the beauty, resilience, and scale of the natural world.
