The Bahamas

The Atlantic Archipelago Where Crystal-Clear Waters and Island Adventures Await

By Heydi Bernal for Ruta Pantera on 8/10/2026 6:00:22 AM

If there is one destination that defines the dream of a tropical escape, it is The Bahamas. Scattered across the turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean just southeast of Florida, this spectacular archipelago of more than 700 islands and 2,000 cays is renowned for its powdery white-sand beaches, vibrant coral reefs, world-class diving, and laid-back island culture. While many visitors know The Bahamas for its luxury resorts and cruise ports, the country also offers secluded islands, rich colonial history, extraordinary marine life, and countless opportunities for outdoor adventure, making it one of the Caribbean's most captivating destinations.
An Island Nation Surrounded by Natural Wonders

The Bahamas covers approximately 13,900 square kilometers (5,382 square miles), yet its territorial waters extend across an immense marine environment filled with coral reefs, blue holes, mangrove forests, and shallow turquoise banks visible even from space. The country gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1973 while remaining a member of the Commonwealth, and today tourism serves as the foundation of its economy.

The capital city, Nassau, located on New Providence Island, blends colorful colonial architecture with modern resorts, lively markets, and historic landmarks such as Parliament Square and Fort Fincastle. Just offshore, Paradise Island is home to luxury resorts, white-sand beaches, and one of the Caribbean's largest marine habitats. Beyond Nassau, travelers discover the Exumas, famous for their swimming pigs and sapphire-blue waters; Eleuthera, known for dramatic pink-sand beaches; Harbour Island, celebrated for its elegant atmosphere; Andros, home to the world's third-largest barrier reef; and Grand Bahama Island, where lush national parks meet beautiful coastlines.
A Paradise for Ocean Lovers and Outdoor Adventure

The Bahamas enjoys a warm tropical climate throughout the year, with temperatures generally ranging between 22°C and 31°C (72°F–88°F). The most popular travel season extends from December through April, when lower humidity and pleasant weather create ideal conditions for beach vacations, boating, and water sports.

The islands are internationally recognized for exceptional marine adventures. Visitors can snorkel among colorful coral reefs, scuba dive through spectacular blue holes and historic shipwrecks, swim with nurse sharks, rays, sea turtles, and the famous Exuma pigs, or enjoy sailing, deep-sea fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and island-hopping excursions. Crystal-clear waters with visibility often exceeding 30 meters (100 feet) make The Bahamas one of the world's premier diving destinations.
Wildlife thrives both above and below the surface. The surrounding waters are home to dolphins, reef sharks, eagle rays, sea turtles, tropical fish, and seasonal whale migrations, while protected national parks preserve flamingos, iguanas, seabirds, mangroves, and endemic plant species that support the country's unique island ecosystems.

Bahamian cuisine reflects African, British, and Caribbean influences. Fresh seafood dominates local menus, with specialties including conch salad, cracked conch, grilled lobster, grouper, snapper, peas and rice, and rum-based tropical cocktails. Meals at casual restaurants generally cost between USD 20 and USD 45, while upscale waterfront dining experiences can exceed USD 100 per person. Accommodations range from boutique guesthouses starting around USD 120 per night to luxury beachfront resorts and private island retreats exceeding USD 800 per night.
Getting There and What to Expect

The Bahamas is easily accessible by air and sea. Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS) in Nassau serves as the country's primary international gateway, with direct flights from major cities across North America, the Caribbean, and Europe. Grand Bahama International Airport (FPO) also provides international connections, while numerous cruise ships arrive daily at Nassau and several Out Islands throughout the year.

Most visitors spend four to seven days exploring The Bahamas, often combining Nassau and Paradise Island with excursions to the Exumas, Harbour Island, Eleuthera, or Andros. Whether relaxing on world-famous beaches, diving among coral reefs, or discovering quiet island communities, travelers quickly understand why The Bahamas remains one of the Caribbean's most sought-after destinations.

The Bahamas is far more than a beach vacation—it is an island nation where the sea shapes every experience. From endless shades of blue and extraordinary marine life to welcoming communities and unforgettable sunsets, every island offers a different perspective on one of the world's most beautiful tropical destinations.
