Las Islas San Juan se encuentran en el extremo noroeste del estado de Washington, cerca de la frontera canadiense y entre el continente y la isla de Vancouver. Son un archipiélago de más de 170 islas e islotes. Las cuatro principales son San Juan, Orcas, Lopez y Shaw. Rodeadas por las aguas del estrecho de Juan de Fuca y el mar Salish, estas islas combinan densos bosques, acantilados rocosos, granjas históricas y encantadores pueblos costeros.
Históricamente, el territorio estuvo habitado por pueblos indígenas como los Lummi antes de la llegada de exploradores europeos en el siglo XVIII. En el siglo XIX, el archipiélago fue escenario del curioso conflicto conocido como la "Guerra del Cerdo" (1859), una disputa fronteriza entre Estados Unidos y el Reino Unido que, sorprendentemente, no tuvo víctimas humanas. Finalmente, en 1872, el emperador alemán Guillermo I arbitró el caso y otorgó las islas a Estados Unidos. Qué hace únicas a las Islas San Juan Una de las mayores atracciones naturales de las Islas San Juan es la presencia de orcas residentes, especialmente visibles cerca de la isla de San Juan. Lime Kiln Point se considera uno de los mejores lugares del mundo para avistar ballenas desde tierra firme. Además, el archipiélago es famoso por su baja contaminación lumínica, que permite una observación espectacular de las estrellas. Otro hecho interesante es que muchas de las islas funcionan con una dinámica rural: hay mercados de agricultores, productos orgánicos locales y una fuerte tradición artística.
