Granada, también conocida como la "Gran Sultana," es una de las ciudades coloniales más destacadas de Nicaragua, famosa por su abundancia de iglesias y fachadas religiosas. Fundada en el siglo XVI, su diseño urbano y arquitectura han resistido incendios, saqueos y terremotos. Entre sus iglesias más emblemáticas se encuentra la Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, construida sobre varias estructuras anteriores que datan del siglo XVI y remodelada a finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX. Hoy, su fachada neoclásica y cúpulas coloridas dominan la Plaza Central. Este rico carácter religioso y urbano ha convertido a Granada en un referente del patrimonio colonial en la región y un imán para viajeros interesados en historia, arquitectura y tradiciones religiosas populares.

Qué Hace Única a Granada

Granada alberga iglesias con historias únicas: la Iglesia de La Merced, cuya fachada muestra rastros de ataques y reconstrucciones desde la época colonial; la Catedral aparece reflejada en una moneda de colección y desde sus torres se obtiene una de las vistas más fotografiadas de la ciudad.

Al recorrer la Calzada y la Plaza Central, asegúrate de detenerte en restaurantes y cafés tradicionales que sirven platos icónicos nicaragüenses: vigorón, gallo pinto y vigorón acompañado de cerveza local. Más allá de las iglesias, los visitantes pueden explorar las Isletas de Granada (paseos en bote a pequeñas islas en el Lago de Nicaragua), donde los tours comerciales suelen costar entre $20 y $35 USD por persona, según la duración y el proveedor. El Volcán Masaya, accesible en excursiones desde Granada, tiene entradas que van de $5 a $10 USD para turistas extranjeros en visitas guiadas nocturnas. La Reserva Natural del Volcán Mombacho ofrece senderos, miradores y actividades (tarifas desde aproximadamente $5 USD por entrada hasta $25–$100 USD por tours guiados o canopy, según el paquete). Las opciones de alojamiento van desde hostales económicos de $10 a $25 USD por noche hasta hoteles boutique y casas coloniales restauradas, con precios entre $60 y más de $150 USD por noche según la temporada. La forma más conveniente de moverse por la ciudad es a pie en el centro colonial; taxis y tuk-tuks cubren trayectos cortos. La mejor época para visitar es durante la estación seca, de noviembre a abril, debido a la menor precipitación y mejores condiciones para excursiones en bote y caminatas; la temporada de lluvias, de mayo a octubre, puede dificultar algunas excursiones al volcán y a las isletas.
