The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá, Colombia

By Estefanía Muriel for Ruta Pantera on 12/20/2025 9:12:33 AM

The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá is an underground temple carved into a former salt mine, located in the Salt Park on the outskirts of Zipaquirá (Cundinamarca). Its modern architecture combines art, engineering, and religious significance in naves carved approximately 180 meters below the mountain. It was rebuilt in the late 20th century after the closure of the old miners' chapel, the result of a design competition that solidified its current appearance as the work of architect Roswell Garavito and his Colombian technical team. This blend of mining heritage and religious significance has made it one of Colombia's most emblematic tourist and spiritual attractions.

What Makes the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá Unique

Inside the cathedral there are sculptures, Stations of the Cross carved in salt, and a monumental illuminated cross that serves as the visual axis of the site; in addition, the complex offers multimedia experiences (mapping), a miner's route and small archaeological and natural exhibits that complement the visit, which explains why it is promoted as a "wonder" of modern heritage in many tourist guides.

Highlights You Can't Miss

When visiting the Salt Cathedral, it's advisable to dedicate at least two hours to exploring the Stations of the Cross, the main nave, and the mining museum. Afterward, in Zipaquirá's main square, the local restaurants are recommended, where you can sample traditional dishes like ajiaco or bandeja paisa. Portions typically cost between $8 and $15 USD per person, depending on the establishment. During December, the city celebrates novenas and religious events related to the cathedral. Additionally, occasional festivals and concerts in the Salt Park attract national and international visitors, so it's worth checking the cultural program before your trip.

Options for Further Discovery

Surrounding the cathedral are several complementary options: the historic center of Zipaquirá, with its main square and cathedral, offers a free or low-cost urban stroll; the archaeological museum associated with the Salt Park and temporary exhibitions within the same complex are often included in visitor passes; in addition, the nearby savanna features small theme parks and natural areas for hiking. Access to the Cathedral and its attractions is available with various pass options (basic, standard, and premium), which in 2025 were reported to range approximately from $18–$40 USD, depending on the category and nationality, while local museums or guided tours in the area typically cost between $3 and $12 USD additional.

The Best Way to Get There

The Salt Cathedral is located about 48–50 km north of Bogotá. The drive takes approximately 50–60 minutes via the Autopista Norte (tolls and traffic can increase travel time), and public transportation options are available from terminals and stations in Bogotá. Organized tours and tourist trains are also available during peak seasons. Accommodation in Zipaquirá ranges from budget hostels (US$20–35 per night) to upscale hotels (US$45–90). It's common to combine a visit with an overnight stay in the savanna or a day trip from Bogotá. The best times to visit are during the dry season (December–March and July–August) for more stable weather, although the site is largely underground and can be enjoyed at any time of year with less risk of inclement weather. To avoid crowds, weekdays outside of holidays tend to be quieter.

Practical and Safety Tips

Wear comfortable shoes and a light jacket (the temperature in the mine is cool), book tickets on the official website during peak season to avoid queues, and respect the signs inside the galleries for conservation and safety reasons; generally speaking, the tourist area is safe during the day, but as with any destination, it is recommended to be cautious with belongings in squares and on public transport, and prefer authorized services and guides from the Salt Park for guided experiences.
