COLOMBIA -- NATURAL AREA -----------------42[ARTICLE]

Parques del Rio, Medellin

Parques del Rio is like no other place in the city. Nature, sports and recreational activities, culture, good gastronomy and the most important events in the city.

By Heydi Bernal for Ruta Pantera on 7/24/2025 9:12:15 AM

Parques del Rio is a destination that stands out for its combination of nature, sports activities, cultural offerings, varied cuisine and the perfect place to hold the most important events in the city of Medellín. This park is unique, unlike any other in the city. It integrates the banks of the Medellín River, and offers residents and visitors a space where they can do a variety of activities with friends, family and colleagues. It integrates the urban with the natural. Parques del Rio is located in a very central location in the city, extending along both banks of the river that crosses the city from south to north. This location connects important areas and is a key meeting point for the community. With 71,800 square meters of public space, it integrates the city with its river, promoting equity, competitiveness and sustainability. Of this area, 38,052 square meters correspond to green areas, where 280 trees have been planted, creating a natural environment ideal for recreation and the conservation of biodiversity.

The park has four restaurants: La Ribera, Aquí Paró Lucho, Dulce Suiza and La Cafebrería, which stand out for their quality, good prices and views that improve the gastronomic experience. This innovative park is divided into two stages, located on the western and eastern sides of the Medellín River, connected by bridges located at the southern and northern ends. On the western side is La Pradera, a green area equipped with wooden benches ideal for picnics and family gatherings, next to the River Pavilion. On the eastern side, the service modules with pergola-type covers that offer shade, and the Plaza de Niebla, which is equipped with water jets that create an environment conducive to outdoor activities, stand out. In addition, the tour allows visitors to appreciate the landscape and the flow of the Medellín River from seven platforms or balconies.
Here, visitors can take fun photos. Also, on the eastern side, five works of sculptural art are exhibited, including the imposing "Montaña Medellín", 14 meters high, the first work by Ugo Rondinone in South America, which celebrates the resilience and natural beauty of the region. Before the construction of this park, the Medellín River was barely visible to pedestrians, separated by the "Highway." Since 2015, Parques del Río has reconnected the city with its river, achieving a transformation in which there are now spaces to transit through paths, green areas and rest areas. This project improved the urbanity of the city and has received international recognition. In addition, Parques del Río houses the longest subway in Colombia, demonstrating its innovative design and commitment to sustainable urban development. The park is located in a very central area, which makes it easy to access by taxi, and it is strategically connected to various points of interest. To the west is the Conquistadores neighborhood, part of the Laureles sector, while to the east is the industrial sector, where the Plaza Mayor and the Teatro Metropolitano are located, very important places in the city. Also nearby is Pueblito Paisa, a replica of the typical Antioquian town that offers a panoramic view of Medellín and the opportunity to taste the local cuisine, along with other cultural and recreational spaces such as the EPM Water Museum, Parque Descalzo, Plaza de la Libertad and Centro de Medellín. In conclusion, Parques del Río Medellín is much more than a park; it is an urban transformation project that unites nature with the cultural and social life of the city. With its extensive green area, recreational proposals, urban art and strategic connections, this space is the ideal destination for those looking to enjoy a complete experience in the heart of Medellín. Whether you are a nature lover, a culture lover, or simply want to relax and enjoy good food, Parques del Río awaits to surprise you and reconnect the city with its vibrant past and promising future.
