| Zihuatanejo es un antiguo pueblo pesquero situado en la bahía del mismo nombre, rodeado por la Sierra Madre del Sur y desarrollado junto con Ixtapa desde los años setenta, pero conservando su esencia tradicional mexicana. Su nombre original era Cihuatlán, que en náhuatl significa “tierra de mujeres”, en referencia a una organización matriarcal prehispánica. Con la llegada de los españoles se le agregó el sufijo “nejo”, que significa insignificante, y así nació “Zihuatanejo”. Registros arqueológicos revelan que la zona estuvo habitada desde hace más de 3.000 años por civilizaciones como los olmecas y toltecas, y más tarde por los aztecas; su historia quedó plasmada en cerámica, escultura y técnicas como el bajareque en los siglos precolombinos. Durante la época colonial, la bahía fue frecuentada por piratas y sirvió como puerto exportador; en el siglo XIX la región destacó por la producción de madera y cocos traídos desde Filipinas. En la Revolución Mexicana muchas haciendas fueron redistribuidas y Zihuatanejo se consolidó como comunidad pesquera, hasta que en los setenta el gobierno federal impulsó el desarrollo turístico con Ixtapa, manteniendo su carácter auténtico . Lo que hace único a Zihuatanejo Un dato curioso es que en la película The Shawshank Redemption el personaje principal sueña con abrir un pequeño hotel junto al mar en Zihuatanejo, lo que ha contribuido a su fama como destino idílico. Otro aspecto interesante es que en la década de 1960 Timothy Leary y Richard Alpert (Ram Dass) establecieron allí una comunidad psicodélica llamada “Zihuatanejo Project”, en torno al Hotel Catalina. Más recientemente, destaca El Partenón de Arturo “El Negro” Durazo: una réplica ostentosa del Partenón de Atenas construida en los 80, convertida en 2024 en centro cultural que recibe entre 600 y 700 visitantes diarios, testimonio de la corrupción y el exceso de aquella época. | ||||

Puntos destacados que no te puedes perder Visitar Playa La Ropa es esencial: sus aguas tranquilas permiten nadar y practicar deportes acuáticos como parasailing o jet‑ski. A lo largo de la playa hay restaurantes que sirven pescado fresco atrapado esa misma mañana, y muchos ofrecen camastros gratis al consumir. Para comer con vista, La Gaviota es muy recomendada por locales y turistas para degustar tacos de pescado al atardecer, con precios aproximados de entre $10‑15 USD por plato principal en restaurantes de gama media, mientras los más elegantes pueden costar $20‑30 USD. Otro must es el desayuno en La Terracita, que sirve enchiladas con vista al mar y jugos naturales; Carmelitas Café ofrece especialidades como requesón guisado o aporreadillo en un ambiente de patio tradicional. En febrero se celebra el Festival Anual Zihua Vela, con carreras de veleros, conciertos, ferias callejeras y subastas, recaudando fondos para la educación local. Opciones para seguir descubriendo El Museo Arqueológico de la Costa Grande, ubicado al extremo sur de la playa municipal junto al Paseo del Pescador, alberga seis salas dedicadas a culturas olmeca, tolteca, mexica y colonial. La entrada ronda los $3–5 USD según exhibiciones. La Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe en El Centro es un icono arquitectónico local y histórico, accesible sin costo. Otro sitio de interés es El Partenón de Durazo, abierto al público como museo y centro cultural; la entrada cuesta aproximadamente $5 USD y permite explorar un símbolo de excesos del pasado. A unos 40 km al norte se encuentra la playa de Troncones, más tranquila, ideal para clases de surf; excursiones de un día cuestan entre $30 y $50 USD incluyendo transporte y lección básica. La mejor forma de acceder al lugar Zihuatanejo cuenta con el Aeropuerto Internacional Ixtapa‑Zihuatanejo a poca distancia del centro (unos 15 km). Por carretera se accede por la Autopista del Sol (carretera federal 95). Desde Acapulco son unos 240 km (3–4 horas en auto). En el centro y zonas costeras hay hoteles boutique y posadas; los precios oscilan entre $60 y $150 USD por noche para alojamiento bueno y céntrico. El traslado desde el aeropuerto al centro toma unos 20‑25 min. Para moverse dentro del pueblo lo ideal es caminar por el malecón y El Centro; los taxis locales o mototaxis cubren distancias cortas por pocos dólares. Las mejores fechas para visitar son febrero y marzo por clima seco y festivales; de mayo a octubre puede haber lluvias, aunque los precios son más bajos y menos turistas. Zona cálida todo el año, temperaturas medias entre 25 °C y 30 °C. Consejos prácticos y de seguridad Es recomendable propinar alrededor del 10‑20 % en restaurantes, y de unos $1–2 USD para personas que ayudan en el hotel o transporte en pangas. Lleva efectivo en pesos para pequeños comercios y mercados; muchos aceptan tarjetas solo en restaurantes principales. Aunque Zihuatanejo es generalmente seguro, evita caminar solo por áreas oscuras por la noche, cuida tus pertenencias en playas concurridas y usa taxis autorizados.
