Chicago is one of the most recognizable cities in the United States, built along the shores of Lake Michigan and known for its architecture, museums, music, food, and extraordinary cultural diversity. It is a large city, but many of its major attractions are relatively easy to connect through public transportation, pedestrian areas, and walkable downtown districts. The heart of the visitor experience is The Loop, the central district where Millennium Park, the Chicago Riverwalk, the Art Institute of Chicago, and some of the city's most important buildings are located. But Chicago is much more than its downtown skyline. The city has 77 distinct neighborhoods, each with its own history, food, culture, and personality. |

What Not to Miss Millennium Park is one of the easiest places to begin exploring Chicago. It is home to Cloud Gate, popularly known as “The Bean,” as well as the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, Crown Fountain, and Lurie Garden. The park is free, making it an excellent first stop even for travelers with limited time. The Chicago Riverwalk provides another way to experience the city, particularly among the dramatic buildings rising along the river. But one of the best ways to understand Chicago is through an architecture river cruise. These tours reveal why Chicago became one of the world's great centers of modern architecture and how its skyline developed over more than a century. The Chicago Architecture Center's 90-minute river cruise is among the city's signature experiences. For panoramic views, travelers can choose between Skydeck Chicago, on the 103rd floor of Willis Tower, and 360 CHICAGO, located in the former John Hancock Center. Skydeck is famous for its glass observation platforms, while 360 CHICAGO offers views over Lake Michigan and the city from the Magnificent Mile. Chicago's museums are another major attraction. The Art Institute of Chicago is one of the country's most important art museums. Along the lakefront, the Museum Campus brings together the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, and Adler Planetarium, while the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry in Hyde Park offers a very different experience focused on science, technology, and innovation. Chicago is home to approximately 60 museums. |

Architecture, Neighborhoods, and Experiences Architecture may be Chicago's most distinctive travel experience. Often described as the birthplace of the skyscraper, the city played a fundamental role in the development of modern architecture and is associated with figures such as Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe, and Jeanne Gang. The Chicago area also contains one of the world's largest concentrations of Frank Lloyd Wright buildings, including the UNESCO-listed Robie House in Hyde Park. Beyond downtown, Chicago's neighborhoods reveal another side of the city. Pilsen is known for Mexican culture, murals, and a diverse food scene. Chinatown combines historic and contemporary Chinese culture and cuisine. Wicker Park and Bucktown are known for independent shops, restaurants, nightlife, and live music, while Hyde Park combines museums, parks, beaches, and important sites connected to Chicago's history. Exploring at least one neighborhood beyond The Loop gives visitors a much broader understanding of the city. Lake Michigan is equally important to Chicago's identity. The city has approximately 26 miles of lakefront, 15 miles of beaches, and an 18.5-mile Lakefront Trail. During warmer months, walking, cycling, running, or simply looking back toward the skyline from the lakefront can be as memorable as visiting a museum. Food is another essential part of the Chicago experience. The city's most famous specialty is deep-dish pizza, a rich, deep-crust style very different from the thin pizzas associated with other American cities. The Chicago-style hot dog is another local institution, traditionally served with a distinctive combination of toppings and no ketchup. Travelers should also look for Italian beef and the jibarito, while Chicago's international neighborhoods offer cuisines from around the world. The city is also home to numerous James Beard and Michelin-recognized restaurants. |

| Fun Facts and Culture Chicago has appeared countless times in movies and television, and its streets, architecture, elevated trains, and skyline have become part of the visual language of American popular culture. The city also played a major role in the development of electric blues, Chicago jazz, and house music, while comedy has a particularly strong tradition through institutions such as The Second City. Another important connection for travelers is Route 66. Chicago is the historic starting point of the famous highway, which stretches westward across the United States. 2026 marks the centennial of Route 66, making Chicago an especially relevant starting point for travelers interested in America's classic road-trip culture. The city is offering special Route 66 programming and experiences during the centennial year. Chicago is also gaining a major new cultural attraction in 2026 with the opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Jackson Park. The 19.3-acre campus includes a museum tower, library, athletic and community spaces, and extensive green areas. The museum officially opened to the public on June 19, 2026. |

| When to Go and How Long to Stay Summer is generally the easiest season for enjoying Chicago's lakefront, parks, outdoor dining, festivals, architecture cruises, and neighborhood events. Fall can offer pleasant temperatures and a strong cultural calendar, while winter is considerably colder and requires more planning for outdoor activities. Museums, restaurants, theaters, and indoor attractions, however, make Chicago a year-round destination. For a first visit, three or four days provide enough time to explore The Loop, take an architecture cruise, visit one or two major museums, see the skyline from above, and explore at least one neighborhood outside downtown. A longer stay allows travelers to experience Chicago at a slower pace and discover more of its neighborhoods. Practical Information Many of Chicago's most popular attractions and tours can be booked in advance, particularly architecture cruises, observation decks, and major museums. For 2026–2027, the Chicago CityPASS costs US$144 for adults and US$114 for children ages 3–11 and includes five attractions. The Chicago C3 costs US$109 for adults and US$79 for children, allowing visitors to choose three attractions. Both products are valid for nine consecutive days after activation. Chicago is also a city that rewards walking. A combination of public transportation, walking, and occasional bicycle rides can connect the major downtown attractions with neighborhoods and lakefront areas without relying on a car. Must-sees: Millennium Park and Cloud Gate, the Chicago Riverwalk, an architecture cruise, the Art Institute of Chicago, a view from Skydeck or 360 CHICAGO, the Lakefront Trail, at least one neighborhood outside downtown, a deep-dish pizza, and a Chicago-style hot dog. Nearby: Travelers extending their stay can explore communities and natural areas around Lake Michigan, while those interested in American road-trip history can use Chicago as the starting point for Route 66. Oak Park, just west of the city, is particularly worthwhile for travelers interested in Frank Lloyd Wright and architecture. |
