| Isla Holbox, cuyo nombre significa “agujero negro” en maya y se pronuncia “hol-bosh”, es una isla tranquila ubicada en el canal de Yucatán, al norte de la península, en el estado de Quintana Roo, México. Desde tiempos coloniales fue refugio de mayas y piratas e incluso se considera que la laguna Yalahau servía como escondite natural; los primeros asentamientos actuales fueron reconocidos en 1852, cuando sus habitantes—llamados “Holboxeños”—se negaron a abandonar la isla frente a los ataques en el continente. A pesar de ser devastada por un huracán en 1886, sus pobladores la reconstruyeron; con el paso del tiempo, se consolidó como comunidad pesquera hasta que, en 1994, fue declarada reserva ecológica dentro del Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna Yum Balam. Lo que hace único a Isla Holbox La isla está integrada en la reserva Yum Balam, creada en 1994 y la primera en México impulsada por comunidades locales. No cuenta con vehículos, ya que circular con autos está prohibido para preservar su entorno; los desplazamientos se realizan en carritos de golf o bicicletas. A unos minutos en lancha se halla Isla Pasión, ideal para disfrutar playas vírgenes en un ambiente silencioso. Más alejados, en tours de día completo, se puede visitar Cabo Catoche—lugar del desembarco español en 1517 y donde se crearon las primeras iglesias coloniales—con excelente snorkel y fauna marina. La mejor forma de acceder al lugar Para llegar a Holbox, se conduce desde Cancún hasta Chiquilá —aproximadamente 2 horas en auto (unos 130 km)— antes de tomar el ferry de unos 20-30 minutos hacia la isla. También existe la opción aérea: vuelos regionales en avionetas Cessna aterrizan en el Aeródromo de Holbox. Al llegar, el transporte es con carritos de golf o bicicleta; muchos hoteles gestionan estos traslados. Los alojamientos varían desde cabañas sencillas hasta boutiques ecológicas: por ejemplo, Nomade Holbox ofrece casas en árboles y experiencia wellness; CasaSandra y Casa Las Tortugas brindan diseño boutique. Estimativamente, una noche promedio oscila entre $100 y 300 USD según temporada y estilo.
