| El Yunque, oficialmente Bosque Nacional El Yunque, es el único bosque tropical lluvioso del Sistema Forestal Nacional de los Estados Unidos, abierto al público en Puerto Rico. Ocupa aproximadamente 29,000 acres (≈ 113 km²) en la Sierra de Luquillo, al noreste de la isla, abarcando municipios como Río Grande, Luquillo y Fajardo (Servicio Forestal de EE. UU.). Su nombre proviene del taíno "Yu-Ke", que significa "Tierra Blanca". Originalmente declarado reserva forestal por el rey Alfonso XII en 1876, fue designado Bosque Nacional en 1903 por el presidente Theodore Roosevelt. A lo largo del siglo XX, especialmente con el auge del Cuerpo Civil de Conservación (CCC), se construyeron infraestructura, senderos y miradores que hoy forman parte de su riqueza histórica (Servicio Forestal de EE. ¿Qué hace único a El Yunque? Se estima que casi el 40% de la flora del bosque es endémica de Puerto Rico, con más de 500 especies de árboles distribuidas en cuatro zonas de vegetación según la altitud (Facebook). Cada año recibe un promedio de 120 a 240 pulgadas de lluvia, lo que lo convierte en uno de los bosques más lluviosos del mundo. También alberga especies icónicas como la rana coquí, la cotorra puertorriqueña en recuperación y los pandas taínos representados en petroglifos dispersos por toda la zona (Descubre Puerto Rico). | |||

Lo más destacado que no te puedes perder Para comenzar tu visita, te recomendamos visitar el Centro de Visitantes El Portal, ubicado en el kilómetro 4.3 de la carretera PR-191. Con una arquitectura sostenible, ofrece exhibiciones interactivas, una breve presentación audiovisual y una pequeña cafetería (Descubre Puerto Rico). Entre los senderos más populares se encuentran La Coca, La Mina (con cascadas y pozas para nadar) y El Angelito, que culmina en una laguna natural tras una caminata de aproximadamente 4 km (Descubre Puerto Rico). Dos miradores destacan: la Torre Yokahú (21 m de altura, construida en 1963), con vistas al Océano Atlántico, y la Torre del Monte Britton, enclavada en la niebla. Después de la caminata, vale la pena echar un vistazo a los restaurantes cercanos. En Río Grande, Rico Pan Bakery ofrece sándwiches criollos con café por $6–$8 USD; Degree 18 Juice Bar ofrece batidos y tazones naturales por $8–$12 USD; y Carabali Bar & Grill, en el Parque de Aventuras Carabalí Rainforest de Luquillo, ofrece platos de carne y mariscos por $20–$30 USD (PlateaPR). El ambiente familiar de Don Pepe (Río Grande) combina la cocina tradicional con música en vivo, ofreciendo platos por $15–$25 USD (PlateaPR). Si por casualidad celebras algún día patronal en los pueblos de los alrededores, puedes disfrutar de máscaras, bailes y quioscos estilo chinchorreo, especialmente en Luquillo. Opciones para seguir descubriendo A menos de 15 km se encuentran los famosos "quioscos de Luquillo", una hilera de restaurantes junto a la playa que sirven pinchos, mariscos y frituras por $5–15 USD (PlateaPR). En el mismo bosque, el histórico Baño Grande es una antigua piscina construida por el CCC (1935-1968) y ahora es patrimonio público. En Río Grande y Fajardo, hay museos como el Museo Indio Taíno (2-5 USD) y parques como el Parque Nacional Fajardo. Un poco más lejos, el Bosque Estatal de Guajataca, con cuevas y senderos, ofrece camping por 4 USD la noche (Wikipedia). La mejor manera de acceder al lugar Desde San Juan, la ruta más rápida es tomar la PR-66 (carretera de peaje) y luego la PR-3 hasta Palmer, un trayecto de aproximadamente 40 km (25 mi) en una hora; desde allí, la PR-191 asciende hasta el parque. El tráfico pesado es común los fines de semana, por lo que el gobierno federal invirtió un millón de dólares en un sistema de aparcamiento disuasorio para aliviar la congestión de hasta 3000 vehículos al día (AP News). Las opciones de alojamiento incluyen posadas rurales en Río Grande o Luquillo, por $100–150 USD la noche, y campamentos en el bosque (cuando estén disponibles) por aproximadamente $20–30 USD la noche. Una visita completa puede durar desde seis horas, con varias caminatas y un descanso para comer, hasta un fin de semana para relajarse y explorar la zona. El clima es tropical y lluvioso, con temperaturas constantes de alrededor de 21 °C (70 °F) durante todo el año, sin estaciones definidas. La temporada más seca va de febrero a abril, ideal para las visitas debido a la menor humedad y la menor cantidad de lluvia. Consejos prácticos y de seguridad Lo mejor es reservar su lugar en el Bosque Nacional con anticipación, visitar el sitio web oficial para conocer el estado de los senderos y comenzar temprano para evitar las multitudes y el tráfico. Use zapatos antideslizantes y un poncho; el terreno tiende a mojarse rápidamente. No nade en áreas no autorizadas. El Yunque es seguro, pero es fundamental mantener la zona limpia (lleve su basura) y respetar la señalización.
