O ICE se disfarça de hospital: a nova estratégia para mascarar a dor nos centros de detenção

Mais médicos, menos humanidade

Nos corredores frios e iluminados por luzes fluorescentes dos centros de detenção do ICE, os corpos continuam se acumulando. E enquanto crescem as denúncias de negligência médica, abusos e mortes sob custódia, a agência lança uma nova campanha que tenta reescrever sua própria narrativa: contratar médicos, enfermeiros e psicólogos para “humanizar” o cativeiro. Mas a pergunta que paira no ar —e que nem o novo uniforme médico consegue esconder— é simples: é possível curar uma ferida aberta quando o sistema continua apertando a mesma faixa? O Politico revelou que o ICE está contratando dezenas de profissionais de saúde em todo os Estados Unidos —de enfermeiros de emergência a farmacêuticos e especialistas em saúde mental. A agência apresenta isso como um avanço. Na verdade, parece mais uma tentativa de silenciar o eco dos processos judiciais que a cercam. As mortes sob custódia aumentaram. Relatórios internos —raramente tornados públicos— descrevem pessoas que morrem esperando atendimento, medicamentos negados por “protocolos” e diagnósticos que nunca chegam. Um sistema de saúde improvisado dentro de um sistema de detenção criado não para cuidar, mas para conter. “Eles tratam os sintomas, não as causas”, disse uma ex-funcionária do ICE que pediu demissão após ver decisões médicas sendo subordinadas à política migratória. “Investe-se mais em controle do que em cuidado.” Enquanto isso, o governo tenta reconstruir sua imagem internacional exibindo hospitais dentro de jaulas. Mas a linguagem do cuidado não pode mascarar o cheiro do confinamento. O que acontece nesses centros não é uma exceção —é o reflexo de um país que ainda trata a migração como uma doença a ser isolada, e não como uma realidade a ser compreendida. No fim, o problema não está na falta de médicos. Está na alma adoecida do próprio sistema.
