Karl Bushby Returns Home After 28 Years of Walking Around the World

The British Adventurer Completes a 50,000-Kilometer Journey That Began at the Southern Tip of Chile.

After nearly three decades of walking across some of the world's most challenging landscapes, Karl Bushby has finally reached his hometown of Hull, in northern England. On November 2, 2026, hundreds of people gathered to welcome him as the 57-year-old adventurer completed a promise he had made when he was just 29.

His expedition began on November 1, 1998, in Punta Arenas, Chile. His goal was to walk all the way back to England without using motorized transportation to advance along his route. What he initially expected to take around 12 years eventually became a 28-year undertaking.

Known as the Goliath Expedition, the journey covered approximately 31,000 miles (50,000 kilometers), crossing four continents and 30 countries. Along the way, Bushby encountered jungles, deserts, mountains, complicated border crossings and extreme weather conditions.

One of the most demanding sections was the crossing of the Darién Gap, the vast jungle region between Colombia and Panama. In 2001, he had to navigate this difficult territory while avoiding Colombia's armed conflict. After crossing a restricted border area in Panama, he was detained for 18 days.

His journey later took him across the Bering Strait, where he traveled over shifting sea ice between Alaska and Russia. He also swam across the Caspian Sea and the English Channel, determined not to use boats, planes or other transportation to move forward.

The expedition was repeatedly interrupted by circumstances beyond his control. Financial difficulties following the 2008 global economic crisis affected sponsorship, the COVID-19 pandemic brought another major setback, and visa restrictions and bureaucratic obstacles kept him from progressing through certain countries for extended periods. It took him almost a decade to make his way through Russia.

The physical challenges were only part of the experience. Bushby faced dangerous encounters, including a confrontation with a polar bear, freezing waters and difficult terrain. He also depended on the generosity of strangers who offered food, shelter and assistance in different parts of the world.

As he explained during his return, completing the expedition was never a solo achievement. People from different countries and communities helped him continue when the journey became particularly difficult.

The homecoming was especially meaningful for his family. One of the most emotional moments came when he embraced his mother, Angela Bushby, whom he had not seen in ten years. She welcomed him outside the house he had left in 1998, bringing an extraordinary chapter of their family history to a close.

He also reunited with his adult son, Adam, and met his 12-year-old granddaughter for the first time. After spending most of his adult life away from home, Bushby now faces the challenge of adjusting to a very different routine.

His return also raises a question that goes beyond the physical accomplishment: how does someone rebuild everyday life after spending 28 years pursuing a single goal? Bushby has already mentioned future speaking engagements, a memoir-related project and a documentary being developed with filmmaker Werner Herzog.

For someone who spent nearly three decades moving from one destination to another, remaining in one place may take some getting used to. Yet his arrival in Hull marks the completion of a commitment that began almost half a lifetime ago.

After crossing continents, navigating borders and confronting some of the world's most demanding environments, Karl Bushby has finally reached the destination that gave his journey its purpose from the beginning: home.
