Did You Know? For the first time in at least six years, ExxonMobil earned more from refining crude oil into fuels than from extracting oil. This reflects the sharp increase in refining margins. Photo Credit: Alex Qian / Pexels

Big Oil’s Boom Contrasts with the Rising Cost of Travel Worldwide

Record Profits for Major Energy Companies Coincide with Higher Fuel, Transportation and Tourism Expenses

Major oil companies are reporting extraordinary profits while consumers face rising energy costs. Their third-quarter 2026 financial results reflect a market shaped by geopolitical tensions, supply disruptions and mounting pressure on fuel prices.

ExxonMobil reported earnings of $15.413 billion between July and September, more than double the amount recorded during the same period in 2025. Chevron posted adjusted earnings of $10.4 billion, an increase of 186%. London-based Shell also reported a sharp rise in profits, reaching approximately $12 billion, up 127% from a year earlier.

An Energy Market Under Pressure

The conflict involving the United States and Iran, difficulties transporting oil through the Strait of Hormuz and disruptions at refining facilities have all contributed to higher fuel prices.

However, rising profits are not driven by crude oil prices alone. Refining margins have also played an important role. ExxonMobil, for example, earned more from its refining operations than from oil production during the quarter.

For consumers, the impact is immediate. In the United States, the average gasoline price reached $4.12 per gallon during the third quarter, 96 cents higher than a year earlier, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA).

Travel Is Becoming More Expensive

Higher energy costs extend far beyond gas stations. Airlines depend on jet fuel, while ground transportation companies, tour operators and accommodation providers all require energy to keep their businesses running.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) estimates that fuel will account for 31.4% of airline operating expenses in 2026, compared with 25.4% in 2025. This pressure may translate into higher airfares and increased costs for tourism-related services.

For people planning vacations, road trips or international journeys, fuel prices can significantly affect travel budgets. Tourism businesses may also face higher expenses for transporting visitors, purchasing supplies and distributing products.

An Impact That Crosses Borders

Although some countries are major oil producers, the energy market is internationally interconnected. A disruption along a strategic route such as the Strait of Hormuz can affect fuel prices in regions far removed from the conflict.

Longer shipping routes, insurance costs and logistical challenges add further pressure to the transportation of crude oil and refined products. These changes can spread across different sectors of the economy, including tourism.

The contrast between the profits of major oil companies and the additional expenses faced by consumers highlights an important reality: energy market trends also influence people's ability to travel and the costs faced by businesses across the tourism industry.

As long as geopolitical tensions and supply constraints persist, energy prices will remain a determining factor in household budgets, business operations and the overall cost of travel.
