The Night María Corina Machado Brought Hope to the Streets

A Personal Account of Emotion, Expectation, and the Dreams of Venezuelans Waiting for Change

Last night, I witnessed something I will never forget. While we waited on the bridge for María Corina Machado to pass underneath, people around me had already been standing there for up to six hours, all for the chance to see her, even if only for a few seconds from a distance.

As we waited, people kept repeating the same phrases: “Now everything is going to change.” “Now the government is going to fall.” “The Iron Lady has arrived.” “Finally, our leader in Venezuela.”

When she finally passed beneath the bridge where I was standing, the crowd erupted. People shouted, “This government is going to fall, María! We’ve been waiting for you!” Others screamed, “I love you, María!” The atmosphere was electric. The tension and emotion were so intense that we all got goosebumps. Everyone wanted to get closer, to reach out and touch her hand, even if just for a moment.

For many Venezuelans, María Corina represents hope—the hope that things can finally change, that the country can move in a different direction, and that families separated by years of crisis may finally be reunited. For us, family reunification is not just a political talking point. It is a deeply personal dream. It means being able to return home, embrace our loved ones, and rebuild the lives we have been forced to leave behind.

Throughout the crowd, people were saying, “We’ve already won the elections.” There was a strong sense of conviction, as though people were ready to believe that the outcome they had been waiting for could finally become a reality. Many seemed prepared to follow María Corina’s lead without hesitation. If she calls for a rally, they will go. If she asks people to take action, they are ready to respond. The level of trust and emotional connection was remarkable.

An Unexpected Arrival and an Unforgettable Night

What made the night even more extraordinary was how unexpected her arrival had been. There was widespread surprise and speculation about how she had managed to enter the country, with discussions about the role Colombia’s president played in facilitating her arrival. Even some of my closest friends had no idea what was happening. Their social media statuses were filled with questions: “What’s going on? What’s happening?” They didn’t even know María Corina had arrived.

And yet, at 11 p.m., the streets were filled with people. The turnout was incredible. Thousands appeared to be drawn by the moment, the excitement, and the possibility that something significant was happening. Seeing so many people come out at such a late hour, despite the uncertainty surrounding the situation, made a powerful impression on me.

Personally, I left feeling that hope had returned. I believe this moment could help move discussions and working groups involving the United States forward more quickly. Of course, we still have to wait and see what happens, but there was a different feeling in the streets last night. For a moment, people seemed to believe that the future might finally hold something different for Venezuela.

“Now We’re Really Dancing!”

On social media, people were tagging Trump and repeating a phrase that caught my attention: “Now we’re really dancing!”

That expression has a particular meaning when you consider what happened a few months ago. Trump had said that Venezuelans were dancing in the streets, but many of us were experiencing something entirely different. We were living through uncertainty, confusion, and anxious anticipation. We were waiting for answers, trying to understand what was happening, and wondering what would come next. Dancing? Happy? Not really. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Last night, however, the emotion felt different. The excitement was visible, the hope was palpable, and the sense of anticipation was impossible to ignore. Whether this moment will lead to the political changes people are hoping for remains to be seen. But what I witnessed was a crowd of people who desperately wanted to believe that change was possible.

For those of us who have spent years hoping to return to Venezuela and reunite with our families, that feeling is difficult to put into words. Last night, on that bridge, surrounded by people shouting, crying, and reaching out toward María Corina, I understood just how much this moment meant to them.

Perhaps the most powerful thing I witnessed was not simply the arrival of a political leader, but the reaction of ordinary people who have been waiting so long for something to believe in. For a few hours, the streets were filled with a renewed sense of possibility.

And for Venezuelans who dream of going home, embracing their families, and seeing their country move forward, that hope means everything.
