Charlevoix: A Getaway Among Storybook Houses and Lake Michigan

Distinctive Architecture, Lakeside Scenery, and a Different Kind of Michigan Experience.

Charlevoix, in northern Michigan, offers an unusual combination of architecture, scenery, and life along the water. The small city, located on the shores of Lake Michigan, is particularly known for the distinctive stone houses created by Earl Young, buildings that have become one of the area's defining features. (visitcharlevoix.com)

The houses are popularly known as “Mushroom Houses,” although they are also referred to as “Hobbit Houses” and “Gnome Homes.” Their appearance comes from features such as stone walls, undulating cedar-shake roofs, large chimneys, and designs adapted to the surrounding terrain. Young did not follow conventional architectural practices; instead, he developed each property individually, incorporating the natural characteristics of the site. (visitcharlevoix.com)

Architecture Integrated Into the Landscape

Earl Young began building his houses in Charlevoix in 1919 and continued working for approximately five decades. During that time, he created 26 residences and four commercial properties, using mainly limestone, fieldstone, and large rocks found in northern Michigan. (visitcharlevoix.com)

One of the most interesting aspects of his work is the relationship between the buildings and the land. Rather than completely clearing lots before construction, Young incorporated existing trees, slopes, and rocks into his designs. The result is a collection of houses that appear to belong to the landscape rather than simply sit on top of it. (visitcharlevoix.com)

One of the best-known properties is the Half House, built in 1947 on Park Avenue. Its design gives the impression that the house has been vertically divided in half. Built primarily with granite and local stone, it is among Charlevoix's most photographed houses and can be viewed from the public road. (visitcharlevoix.com)

Visitors can see many of the houses on foot from downtown Charlevoix, while others can be reached by car. A map is also available for those who want to follow a self-guided route. It is important to remember that the houses are private properties and are not open for interior visits. (visitcharlevoix.com)

Beyond the Houses

Earl Young's architecture is the feature that most distinguishes Charlevoix, but the city offers other reasons to extend a visit. Its location between Lake Michigan and inland waterways makes it possible to combine an architectural tour with beaches, boating, walking, and outdoor activities. (charlevoixmi.gov)

Downtown Charlevoix also offers restaurants, shops, and places to enjoy the waterfront. For travelers who want to explore farther, the Boulder Park area includes several Young properties and provides another opportunity to see how he incorporated stone, vegetation, and the natural setting into his designs. (visitcharlevoix.com)

Charlevoix is particularly appealing to travelers looking for smaller destinations with a strong architectural identity. Rather than relying on a single major attraction, the city allows visitors to combine historic houses with the scenery of Lake Michigan and outdoor activities.

The experience also demonstrates how architecture can become a reason to travel. In Charlevoix, Earl Young's houses are more than historic buildings: they are part of the destination's identity and offer a distinctive way to discover a community in northern Michigan.
