O recorde de público da Iowa State Fair destaca uma tendência que ganha força nas Américas: grandes eventos podem criar fortes motivos para viajar e gerar uma atividade econômica significativa nos destinos que os recebem.

Os grandes eventos que estão redefinindo o turismo nas Américas

O recorde da Iowa State Fair mostra como grandes eventos impulsionam viagens e a economia.

Em Des Moines, uma celebração ligada à agricultura, à gastronomia, à música e às tradições de Iowa acaba de demonstrar que um grande evento pode ter um impacto que vai muito além de suas instalações. A Iowa State Fair recebeu 1.218.834 visitantes entre 13 e 23 de agosto de 2026, superando o recorde anterior de 1.182.682 estabelecido em 2024.

O recorde também apareceu nos números de público diário. Em 22 de agosto, 130.654 pessoas compareceram à feira em um único dia, demonstrando a capacidade de um evento regional de gerar enormes fluxos de visitantes em um período muito curto.

Para a indústria do turismo, porém, o número de ingressos vendidos conta apenas parte da história.

Os visitantes que chegam de outras cidades precisam de hotéis, restaurantes, transporte, entretenimento e outros serviços. Os gastos gerados pelo evento se espalham muito além do recinto da feira, beneficiando hotéis, restaurantes, comércio e prestadores de serviços locais.

O verdadeiro valor está além do recinto

Uma análise econômica estimou que os visitantes gastaram US$ 95,8 milhões dentro da feira em 2026. O evento gerou uma contribuição estimada de US$ 199 milhões para o PIB de Iowa, enquanto a atividade relacionada produziu aproximadamente US$ 104 milhões em renda pessoal.

O turismo representa uma parte importante dessa atividade econômica. Um estudo anterior constatou que os turistas representavam aproximadamente 48% dos visitantes em 2022, gerando cerca de US$ 100 milhões em gastos durante suas viagens por Iowa. Para 2026, outra análise estimou aproximadamente US$ 73,8 milhões em gastos turísticos fora do recinto da feira.

Isso transforma a feira em algo mais do que uma celebração anual. É um mecanismo capaz de atrair pessoas para um destino e distribuir seus gastos entre diferentes setores da economia local.

Um evento também pode ser um motivo para viajar

Os destinos competem constantemente pela atenção dos viajantes. Os grandes eventos têm uma vantagem importante: oferecem um motivo concreto para viajar em uma determinada data.

Um festival gastronômico pode levar visitantes a uma cidade que nunca haviam considerado. Um concerto pode aumentar a demanda por hotéis durante um fim de semana. Um campeonato esportivo pode impulsionar restaurantes, transporte e comércio.

A Iowa State Fair demonstra que essa estratégia também funciona quando o atrativo está profundamente ligado à identidade local. Sua força não depende apenas de grandes artistas ou espetáculos, mas de uma experiência difícil de reproduzir em outro destino.

A experiência de Iowa tem implicações para destinos de toda a América. O continente conta com milhares de feiras, carnavais, festivais gastronômicos, celebrações culturais e eventos esportivos capazes de gerar importantes fluxos de visitantes.

Para cidades e regiões que buscam diversificar suas economias turísticas, esses eventos podem se tornar ferramentas estratégicas. Mas atrair grandes quantidades de visitantes também exige capacidade hoteleira, transporte, infraestrutura e serviços suficientes para atender à demanda sem prejudicar a experiência do viajante.

Por isso, o sucesso de um evento não deveria ser medido apenas pela quantidade de pessoas presentes. Também importa quantas permanecem durante a noite, quanto gastam, quais negócios se beneficiam e quantas retornam posteriormente.

A Iowa State Fair acaba de oferecer uma demonstração contundente desse modelo. Uma celebração de 11 dias pode gerar atividade econômica que se estende muito além de seu próprio calendário.

Para o turismo nas Américas, a lição é clara: os grandes eventos já não são apenas entretenimento. São ferramentas para criar demanda, atrair viajantes e fortalecer as economias turísticas locais.
