Miami bajo los 100 °F: cuando el calor empieza a cambiar la ciudad del sol

El calor extremo revela una nueva realidad para Miami: más temperatura, humedad y desafíos para el turismo.

El 18 de agosto, Miami alcanzó los 100 °F (37,8 °C) y el índice de calor llegó aproximadamente a 107 °F (41,7 °C). El récord llamó la atención, pero la cifra más importante está en lo que ocurre alrededor de ella: la ciudad está experimentando períodos de calor intenso con mayor frecuencia y durante más tiempo.

Según Climate Central, Miami registra actualmente 44 días adicionales de verano con temperaturas superiores a lo normal frente a la década de 1970. La temperatura media durante junio, julio y agosto ha aumentado aproximadamente 2,6 °F (1,4 °C) en ese mismo periodo.

Pero la humedad es donde el cambio resulta más significativo. Miami pasó de unos 50 días al año de calor peligrosamente húmedo en la década de 1970 a 117 días entre 2016 y 2025. Esa combinación de calor y humedad puede impedir que el cuerpo se enfríe eficazmente y aumentar el riesgo de enfermedades relacionadas con el calor.

Para una ciudad turística, las consecuencias son concretas.

El calor empieza a cambiar la experiencia del visitante

Miami depende de actividades que se desarrollan precisamente en los lugares más expuestos: playas, paseos, deportes acuáticos, recorridos urbanos, terrazas, eventos al aire libre y excursiones.

Cuando las condiciones térmicas se vuelven extremas, esas actividades no necesariamente desaparecen, pero pueden cambiar de horario. Una excursión que antes comenzaba al mediodía puede resultar más atractiva temprano en la mañana. Una caminata urbana puede requerir más pausas. Los operadores pueden necesitar aumentar el acceso a agua, sombra y espacios climatizados.

El impacto también llega a la infraestructura. Temperaturas más elevadas aumentan la demanda de aire acondicionado en hoteles, viviendas, restaurantes, comercios y transporte. Durante una ola de calor, esa demanda crece precisamente cuando las condiciones ambientales ejercen mayor presión sobre los sistemas eléctricos.

Para quienes trabajan al aire libre, el problema es aún más directo. Construcción, mantenimiento, servicios turísticos, transporte y otras actividades pueden implicar largas horas de exposición. El riesgo aumenta cuando el calor extremo se combina con humedad elevada y jornadas prolongadas.

Miami tampoco es un caso aislado. Durante la ola de calor de agosto, más de 72 millones de personas estuvieron bajo alertas por temperaturas peligrosas en distintas partes de Estados Unidos. Algunas localidades de Oklahoma alcanzaron 112 °F (44,4 °C).

Pero Miami presenta una característica particular: su economía y su identidad internacional están estrechamente vinculadas al clima. La ciudad no puede simplemente protegerse del calor; necesita seguir funcionando y recibiendo visitantes dentro de él.

Eso convierte la adaptación en una cuestión económica además de ambiental.

Hoteles, restaurantes y operadores turísticos pueden necesitar modificar horarios, mejorar sistemas de refrigeración, crear más espacios interiores y preparar protocolos específicos para los días de mayor riesgo. Los visitantes, por su parte, tendrán que incorporar la temperatura y el índice de calor a decisiones que antes dependían principalmente de lluvia, huracanes o temporadas altas.

El cambio también puede modificar el atractivo de determinadas actividades. Los espacios interiores con aire acondicionado pueden adquirir mayor valor durante las horas centrales del día, mientras que playas, parques y recorridos exteriores pueden concentrar visitantes en las primeras horas de la mañana y después del atardecer.

No significa que Miami vaya a dejar de ser una ciudad de playa. Significa que el clima que ayudó a construir su identidad turística está adquiriendo nuevas condiciones de uso.

El episodio de 100 °F es, en ese sentido, menos importante por la cifra récord que por lo que revela. Una ciudad acostumbrada al calor está teniendo que adaptarse a una combinación de temperaturas más elevadas y mayor humedad que puede afectar la salud, la infraestructura, el trabajo y el turismo.

Para los viajeros, la pregunta comienza a cambiar. Ya no se trata únicamente de si Miami tendrá buen tiempo durante las vacaciones, sino de cuándo será realmente cómodo y seguro disfrutar de la ciudad al aire libre.

Ese cambio puede parecer pequeño en la planificación de un viaje. Para una ciudad cuya economía depende de millones de visitantes, puede convertirse en una cuestión mucho mayor.
