Cuba's President Accuses the United States of "Genocide," Calling Into Question the Future of Tourism on the Island

Beyond the diplomatic dispute, Cuba’s ongoing crisis is forcing travelers to reconsider their expectations when visiting the island.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel launched one of the strongest accusations against the United States in recent years by claiming that Washington is committing "genocide" against the Cuban people through economic sanctions and its policies toward the island. The president made the remarks during the commemoration of the anniversary of the Moncada Barracks attack, stating that the goal of the United States is to create an economic collapse that could lead to a change in government. Beyond the political confrontation, his comments reflect the severity of Cuba’s internal situation and raise new questions for those considering a trip to the country.

The statements come at an especially difficult moment for the island. Cuba is experiencing one of its worst economic crises in decades, marked by frequent power outages, fuel shortages, difficulties importing food, medicine, and other essential goods, as well as inflation that has significantly reduced purchasing power. This combination of factors has affected multiple sectors of the economy, including tourism, one of the country’s main sources of revenue.

Cuba remains open to international tourism, and its main destinations continue to welcome visitors. However, the experience may be very different from what many travelers expect from a traditional Caribbean destination. Power cuts regularly affect cities and communities across the island; fuel shortages can create changes to excursions and transportation; and some restaurants, businesses, and private accommodations must reduce operating hours or temporarily suspend activities due to operational limitations.

Hotels operated by major international chains often have backup generators that allow them to maintain many of their services during blackouts. However, travelers choosing private accommodations or seeking more local experiences may be more exposed to the effects of the crisis, especially outside the main tourist centers.

Transportation represents another significant challenge. Limited fuel availability has reduced the frequency of some services and can cause delays or last-minute changes to travel between cities. For those planning to explore different regions of Cuba, flexibility, advance confirmation of reservations, and avoiding overly tight schedules will be essential.

Despite the difficult circumstances, Cuba retains some of the Caribbean’s most important cultural, historical, and natural attractions. Old Havana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, remains one of the region’s major cultural landmarks, while destinations such as Viñales, Trinidad, Cienfuegos, Varadero, and the northern cays continue to attract visitors interested in history, architecture, nature, and beaches.

However, Díaz-Canel’s recent statements reflect a new escalation in relations between Havana and Washington. Although there are no official restrictions preventing tourists from visiting Cuba, the language used by the Cuban government highlights the depth of the conflict and increases uncertainty about the island’s political and economic future.

For travelers who already have plans to visit, the recommendation is to research conditions before departure, confirm flights, accommodations, and activities, purchase travel insurance, and maintain alternative plans. It is also important to travel with realistic expectations: Cuba continues to offer a unique cultural experience, but current conditions require more preparation than in previous years.

Beyond the dispute between Cuba and the United States, the main question for travelers is how current circumstances may affect their experience. When a country faces a prolonged economic crisis and its own government describes the situation in extremely serious terms, it is reasonable for some visitors to reconsider the timing of their trip. Cuba remains a destination of extraordinary cultural and historical value, but understanding the island’s current reality is essential before making a decision.
