El humo de los incendios de Canadá regresa a Estados Unidos y complica los viajes de verano.

El humo de los incendios forestales de Canadá vuelve a desplazarse hacia Estados Unidos, afectando la calidad del aire en varias regiones durante una de las temporadas de mayor movimiento turístico del año.

El humo avanza hacia el sur y el este impulsado por los patrones del viento, generando cielos brumosos y condiciones menos favorables para actividades al aire libre como senderismo, camping, recorridos escénicos y visitas a parques nacionales.

El impacto dependerá de la dirección del viento y de las condiciones meteorológicas de cada zona, pero las regiones de los Grandes Lagos, el Medio Oeste y el noreste de Estados Unidos se encuentran entre las áreas más vulnerables. Estados como Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nueva York y otros sectores cercanos a la frontera con Canadá han registrado episodios similares en los últimos años debido al humo proveniente de incendios forestales canadienses.

La principal preocupación para la salud es el material particulado fino conocido como PM2.5, pequeñas partículas contaminantes capaces de ingresar profundamente en los pulmones. Según la Agencia de Protección Ambiental de Estados Unidos (EPA), niveles elevados de PM2.5 pueden afectar especialmente a niños, adultos mayores y personas con asma, enfermedades cardíacas o problemas respiratorios.

El impacto no se limita a la salud; también puede afectar la experiencia turística. El humo puede reducir la visibilidad, modificar los paisajes, disminuir la calidad de las fotografías y dificultar actividades como caminatas largas, ciclismo o excursiones en zonas naturales.

Los parques nacionales y destinos al aire libre pueden continuar abiertos, pero las condiciones pueden cambiar rápidamente. Quienes tengan programadas actividades en montañas, lagos, bosques o áreas recreativas deberían consultar los niveles locales de calidad del aire antes de salir y estar preparados para modificar sus planes.

Los eventos de verano también podrían verse afectados. Festivales, conciertos, competencias deportivas y actividades al aire libre pueden implementar recomendaciones adicionales de salud cuando los niveles de contaminación aumentan. Las autoridades y organizadores suelen monitorear las condiciones para determinar si es necesario realizar ajustes.

El transporte también puede enfrentar algunos desafíos. Aunque el humo generalmente no provoca cierres completos de aeropuertos, una combinación de baja visibilidad y condiciones meteorológicas adversas puede generar retrasos en determinadas regiones. Los pasajeros con vuelos programados deberían verificar la información de sus aerolíneas antes de dirigirse al aeropuerto.

Los incendios forestales se han convertido en un factor cada vez más importante para el turismo de verano en América del Norte. En 2023, el humo de incendios en Canadá llegó a miles de kilómetros dentro de Estados Unidos y provocó algunos de los peores episodios de calidad del aire registrados en ciudades como Nueva York, Chicago y Washington D.C.

La recomendación principal es mantener información actualizada sobre las condiciones ambientales, consultar los índices de calidad del aire, evitar esfuerzos físicos intensos durante los períodos de mayor contaminación y contar con alternativas bajo techo cuando sea necesario.

El regreso del humo no significa necesariamente la cancelación de los planes de verano, pero confirma una nueva realidad para el turismo en Norteamérica: las condiciones ambientales se han convertido en un factor cada vez más relevante en la planificación de actividades y destinos.
