La conmemoración del 250.º aniversario de la independencia de Estados Unidos, prevista para 2026, ha quedado envuelta en una creciente controversia política después de que legisladores demócratas publicaran un informe en el que cuestionan la administración de recursos privados destinados a financiar las celebraciones nacionales. El documento sostiene que parte de las donaciones recaudadas para America250, la entidad encargada de coordinar numerosos eventos conmemorativos, habría sido utilizada para fines distintos a los inicialmente planteados, una acusación que la organización rechaza de manera categórica.

El informe, elaborado por miembros demócratas del Congreso, sostiene que varios donantes realizaron aportes con el propósito de apoyar actividades educativas, culturales y comunitarias relacionadas con el aniversario número 250 de la independencia estadounidense. Sin embargo, los investigadores afirman haber identificado operaciones financieras que, según su análisis, merecen un mayor escrutinio por la posible utilización de recursos en actividades con componentes políticos o promocionales que excederían los objetivos originales de la organización.

America250 negó las conclusiones del informe y aseguró que todas sus operaciones financieras cumplen con la legislación vigente y con las normas aplicables a organizaciones sin fines de lucro. Sus representantes calificaron las acusaciones como infundadas y sostuvieron que los fondos han sido administrados bajo estrictos mecanismos de supervisión, auditoría y cumplimiento normativo. La entidad también afirmó que continuará colaborando con las autoridades y defendiendo la transparencia de su gestión.
