Cuba bajo presión: sanciones, crisis energética y aislamiento financiero

EE. UU. sanciona a Miguel Díaz-Canel mientras la suspensión de pagos con Visa y Mastercard profundiza los desafíos económicos de la isla

Cuba enfrenta una nueva escalada de presión política y económica tras la decisión de Estados Unidos de imponer sanciones al presidente cubano Miguel Díaz-Canel, varios miembros de su entorno cercano y entidades vinculadas al gobierno. La medida coincide con el anuncio de que las tarjetas Visa y Mastercard dejarán de procesar pagos en la isla, un hecho que amenaza con agravar aún más la crisis financiera y el aislamiento económico que atraviesa el país.

Las sanciones fueron anunciadas por Washington como parte de una estrategia para aumentar la presión sobre las autoridades cubanas. Entre los afectados figuran familiares de Díaz-Canel, integrantes de la familia Castro y organismos estatales vinculados a la estructura política y económica del país. Aunque las restricciones están dirigidas principalmente a funcionarios específicos, reflejan un endurecimiento de las tensiones entre ambos gobiernos.

El impacto más significativo podría sentirse en el ámbito financiero. El Banco Central de Cuba confirmó la suspensión de determinadas operaciones vinculadas a Visa y Mastercard después de que una entidad financiera extranjera interrumpiera sus servicios para evitar posibles sanciones estadounidenses. Como consecuencia, la isla pierde una de sus principales conexiones con los sistemas internacionales de pago, dificultando las transacciones relacionadas con turismo, comercio y servicios.

La noticia llega en un momento especialmente delicado para la economía cubana. Según estimaciones de economistas y organismos internacionales, la economía de la isla acumula una contracción superior al 15% desde 2020, mientras continúa enfrentando problemas estructurales como escasez de divisas, baja productividad, inflación y dificultades para importar bienes esenciales.

El turismo, una de las principales fuentes de ingreso de moneda extranjera, atraviesa una situación crítica. Antes de la pandemia, Cuba recibía más de 4 millones de visitantes internacionales al año. Sin embargo, durante los primeros meses de 2026 la llegada de turistas continuó mostrando cifras muy inferiores a las registradas en los años de mayor crecimiento. Esta situación afecta directamente la entrada de divisas necesarias para financiar importaciones y sostener diversos sectores de la economía nacional.

Otro dato preocupante es la baja ocupación hotelera. Diversos informes indican que la ocupación promedio de hoteles internacionales se ha mantenido por debajo de los niveles esperados para garantizar la rentabilidad de muchas instalaciones turísticas. Esto ocurre pese a las importantes inversiones realizadas por el gobierno en infraestructura hotelera durante los últimos años.

A las dificultades económicas se suma una severa crisis energética. Millones de cubanos enfrentan apagones recurrentes debido a problemas en la generación eléctrica, escasez de combustible y limitaciones para realizar mantenimiento a las plantas energéticas. En algunas regiones, los cortes de electricidad se extienden durante varias horas al día, afectando hogares, hospitales, comercios e industrias.

La situación también repercute en la inversión extranjera. Varias empresas internacionales han revisado o reducido sus operaciones en la isla debido a la incertidumbre económica, las restricciones financieras y las dificultades para realizar transacciones internacionales. La salida o reducción de operaciones de algunas compañías genera preocupación sobre la capacidad de Cuba para atraer nuevo capital en el corto plazo.

Expertos en economía internacional consideran que la combinación de sanciones, restricciones financieras, crisis energética y bajo crecimiento económico está creando uno de los escenarios más complejos para Cuba desde el llamado "Período Especial" de la década de 1990. La falta de acceso a financiamiento internacional limita la capacidad del país para adquirir combustible, alimentos, medicamentos y materias primas necesarias para impulsar la producción nacional.

Desde La Habana, las autoridades cubanas han rechazado las nuevas sanciones y sostienen que las medidas estadounidenses buscan aumentar la presión económica sobre la isla. Por su parte, Washington argumenta que las restricciones están dirigidas contra funcionarios y entidades específicas, no contra la población cubana en general.

Mientras tanto, los mercados y analistas internacionales observan con atención la evolución de los acontecimientos. La pérdida de acceso a importantes sistemas globales de pago, sumada a la persistente crisis energética y a la desaceleración económica, podría representar nuevos obstáculos para la recuperación de la economía cubana durante el resto de 2026.

En conclusión, Cuba enfrenta una combinación de desafíos internos y externos que amenaza con profundizar su aislamiento financiero. Las nuevas sanciones contra Miguel Díaz-Canel y la suspensión de operaciones con Visa y Mastercard representan mucho más que un episodio diplomático: reflejan la creciente complejidad de una economía que busca recuperarse en medio de restricciones financieras, escasez de recursos y un entorno geopolítico cada vez más desafiante.<
