Milhões de visitantes colocam à prova o futuro da conservação nas paisagens mais famosas dos Estados Unidos

Durante mais de 150 anos, os parques nacionais dos Estados Unidos representaram uma das ideias mais influentes de conservação na história moderna: proteger os lugares naturais mais extraordinários do país para que possam ser apreciados por todas as gerações. O que começou em 1872 com a criação de Yellowstone, o primeiro parque nacional do mundo, transformou-se em um movimento global que inspirou outros países a criar seus próprios sistemas de áreas protegidas.

No entanto, no século XXI, esses territórios enfrentam um paradoxo inesperado: os parques estão sendo pressionados não pela falta de interesse, mas pelo seu enorme sucesso. Milhões de pessoas querem contemplar suas paisagens, caminhar por suas trilhas e fotografar cenários que, durante gerações, simbolizaram a grandeza natural dos Estados Unidos. O problema é que lugares criados para preservar a tranquilidade, a biodiversidade e a beleza cênica agora precisam administrar multidões semelhantes às de grandes destinos urbanos.

O sistema de parques nacionais dos Estados Unidos recebeu mais de 323 milhões de visitas em 2025, um número que confirma a importância do turismo de natureza como uma das principais formas de recreação do país. Essa quantidade representa um dos níveis mais altos de demanda turística registrados na história do sistema, mas também evidencia uma crescente pressão sobre ecossistemas frágeis que precisam de proteção constante.

Para compreender a dimensão do fenômeno, basta observar que alguns parques recebem milhões de visitantes todos os anos, mas a maioria se concentra em poucos pontos emblemáticos: os mirantes mais famosos, as trilhas mais fotografadas e os locais que aparecem constantemente nas redes sociais e documentários. A consequência é uma nova realidade: a natureza mais admirada do país também é aquela que enfrenta os maiores riscos de superlotação.

A pergunta que agora enfrentam os administradores do sistema de parques nacionais é complexa: como permitir que milhões de pessoas desfrutem desses lugares sem que essa mesma popularidade termine prejudicando-os?

O nascimento de uma ideia que mudou o mundo

Antes de Yellowstone, a ideia de reservar grandes territórios naturais para protegê-los era praticamente desconhecida. No século XIX, a expansão industrial, a exploração dos recursos naturais e a transformação acelerada das paisagens estavam modificando rapidamente enormes regiões da América do Norte.

A criação de Yellowstone em 1872 estabeleceu um princípio revolucionário: alguns lugares eram importantes demais para serem explorados e deveriam permanecer protegidos como patrimônio coletivo. Essa decisão marcou o nascimento do conceito moderno de parque nacional e mudou para sempre a forma como a humanidade entende a conservação.

Atualmente, o sistema de parques nacionais dos Estados Unidos inclui mais de 400 áreas protegidas, entre parques nacionais, monumentos históricos, áreas recreativas e reservas naturais. Esses espaços protegem desde vulcões ativos e geleiras até florestas antigas, desertos, áreas costeiras e ecossistemas onde sobrevivem espécies que desapareceram de outras regiões.

Yellowstone: o parque onde a Terra ainda está viva

Yellowstone continua sendo um dos lugares naturais mais impressionantes do planeta. Com aproximadamente 8.900 quilômetros quadrados de extensão, é maior do que alguns pequenos países e protege um dos ecossistemas mais completos da América do Norte.

Sua principal característica é a extraordinária atividade geológica. O parque está localizado sobre um enorme ponto quente vulcânico que alimenta seus gêiseres, fontes termais e paisagens únicas. Yellowstone possui aproximadamente a metade de todos os gêiseres ativos do mundo, tornando-se o maior sistema geotérmico conhecido do planeta.

Um de seus símbolos mais famosos é Old Faithful, um gêiser que pode lançar colunas de água quente para o céu e que se tornou uma das imagens mais reconhecidas do turismo norte-americano. Milhões de visitantes chegam todos os anos para observar um fenômeno natural que lembra que a Terra continua mudando e evoluindo.

Mas Yellowstone não se destaca apenas por sua geologia. Também é um dos lugares mais importantes do mundo para a conservação de grandes mamíferos. Suas populações de bisões, lobos, ursos-pardos e alces representam um dos exemplos mais bem-sucedidos de recuperação da fauna na América do Norte.

O aumento do turismo, entretanto, gera novos desafios. Durante as temporadas de maior movimento, algumas áreas do parque enfrentam congestionamentos, concentração excessiva de visitantes e situações de risco relacionadas à interação entre pessoas e animais selvagens.
