A redução de passageiros em meio à maior expansão aeroportuária da história do país e à crescente concorrência regional

O Aeroporto Internacional Jorge Chávez vive um momento paradoxal. Poucas semanas após inaugurar uma das expansões aeroportuárias mais ambiciosas da América do Sul, o principal terminal aéreo do Peru registrou sua primeira queda no tráfego internacional de passageiros em 2026. Embora a redução observada seja relativamente pequena, ela representa um sinal que merece atenção, pois ocorre em um cenário de forte concorrência regional, mudanças nos hábitos de viagem e desafios crescentes para a indústria global da aviação.

Em abril de 2026, o tráfego aéreo internacional do Peru apresentou uma queda anual de aproximadamente 0,5%, interrompendo uma trajetória de crescimento que vinha sendo mantida nos primeiros meses do ano. À primeira vista, o número pode parecer pouco relevante. No entanto, no setor da aviação comercial, até mesmo pequenas variações são analisadas cuidadosamente, pois frequentemente antecipam mudanças mais profundas na demanda, na conectividade ou na competitividade de um mercado.

A situação é particularmente significativa quando se considera a magnitude do investimento realizado no novo Aeroporto Jorge Chávez. O projeto, avaliado em bilhões de dólares, ampliou consideravelmente a capacidade operacional do aeroporto e busca posicionar Lima entre os principais hubs aéreos das Américas. O novo terminal, um dos mais modernos da América Latina, foi projetado para atender cerca de 40 milhões de passageiros por ano nos próximos anos, praticamente dobrando a capacidade histórica do aeroporto peruano.

Poucos aeroportos da região possuem uma localização tão estratégica. Lima está situada em um ponto geográfico privilegiado entre a América do Norte e o Cone Sul, permitindo conexões eficientes entre cidades como Los Angeles, Cidade do México, Santiago, Buenos Aires e São Paulo. Essa vantagem ajudou a transformar o Jorge Chávez em um dos mais importantes centros de conexão da América do Sul ao longo da última década.

Um dado interessante é que o aeroporto de Lima tem sido historicamente um dos mais premiados da região pela qualidade de seus serviços. Mesmo antes da inauguração do novo terminal, já era frequentemente reconhecido como um dos melhores aeroportos da América do Sul por organizações do setor. A expansão pretende fortalecer ainda mais essa posição, incorporando novas áreas comerciais, mais portões de embarque, tecnologia de última geração e maior capacidade para operações internacionais.

No entanto, a concorrência regional nunca foi tão intensa. O Aeroporto Internacional de Tocumen, no Panamá, continua consolidando sua posição como um dos maiores centros de conexões do continente graças à expansão da Copa Airlines. Bogotá fortalece sua presença com o crescimento da Avianca e novas rotas internacionais. Santiago mantém elevados padrões de eficiência operacional, enquanto São Paulo permanece como o maior mercado aéreo da América do Sul. Nesse contexto, os aeroportos disputam agressivamente companhias aéreas, passageiros em trânsito e novas rotas.

Um dos temas mais debatidos entre especialistas e representantes do setor é o impacto das tarifas aeroportuárias sobre a competitividade. Diversos grupos da indústria alertam que determinadas cobranças aplicadas aos passageiros internacionais podem influenciar as decisões das companhias aéreas quanto ao planejamento de rotas e investimentos operacionais. Embora a qualidade da infraestrutura seja fundamental, os custos continuam sendo um fator decisivo em um setor caracterizado por margens de lucro relativamente reduzidas.

As mudanças no comportamento dos viajantes também estão transformando o cenário. Segundo organizações internacionais da aviação, os passageiros atuais são muito mais sensíveis aos preços do que antes da pandemia. Além disso, há uma preferência crescente por voos diretos que reduzam o tempo de viagem e eliminem conexões desnecessárias. Essa tendência beneficia aeroportos capazes de atrair rotas sem escalas e cria desafios para aqueles que dependem fortemente do tráfego de conexão.

A importância do Jorge Chávez vai muito além da aviação. O turismo continua sendo uma atividade econômica fundamental para o Peru, gerando milhões de empregos diretos e indiretos. Destinos emblemáticos como Machu Picchu, Cusco, a Amazônia peruana, Arequipa e o Lago Titicaca dependem fortemente da conectividade aérea internacional. Antes da pandemia, o turismo representava cerca de 4% do Produto Interno Bruto do país, e o governo continua trabalhando para recuperar plenamente esses níveis de atividade.

Fatores econômicos globais também podem estar influenciando a desaceleração. Em 2026, diversas economias enfrentam incertezas relacionadas à inflação, aos custos do combustível, às oscilações cambiais e à moderação do crescimento econômico. Esses fatores costumam afetar diretamente as decisões de viagem tanto de turistas quanto de viajantes corporativos. A Associação Internacional de Transporte Aéreo (IATA) observa que o tráfego global de passageiros continua crescendo, mas em um ritmo mais moderado do que o registrado durante os primeiros anos da recuperação pós-pandemia.

Um dado curioso é que o Peru possui uma das maiores concentrações de atrativos turísticos da América Latina. O país abriga treze sítios inscritos na Lista do Patrimônio Mundial da UNESCO, mais de oitenta ecossistemas reconhecidos e uma biodiversidade extraordinária que o coloca entre as nações mais megadiversas do planeta. Essa riqueza natural e cultural transforma a conectividade aérea em um ativo estratégico não apenas para o turismo, mas também para o desenvolvimento regional e a integração nacional.

A experiência internacional demonstra que a infraestrutura, por si só, não garante crescimento no tráfego aéreo. Aeroportos modernos construídos em diversas partes do mundo enfrentaram dificuldades quando estratégias comerciais, conectividade e competitividade de custos não evoluíram no mesmo ritmo da expansão física. Por isso, o desafio do novo Jorge Chávez será transformar sua impressionante infraestrutura em uma vantagem econômica e logística sustentável.

Mais do que uma crise, a recente queda no tráfego internacional parece representar um alerta antecipado. O principal aeroporto do Peru possui infraestrutura de classe mundial, localização privilegiada e enorme potencial turístico. Ainda assim, a liderança regional deverá ser conquistada em um ambiente cada vez mais competitivo, onde eficiência, conectividade, custos operacionais e experiência do passageiro serão tão importantes quanto terminais modernos e pistas de última geração.
