Una laguna escondida en El Salvador se volvió turquesa — y los viajeros están corriendo para verla

Una extraña transformación natural está atrayendo multitudes hacia uno de los nuevos destinos más sorprendentes de Centroamérica

En las montañas del oriente de El Salvador, una tranquila laguna volcánica se ha convertido repentinamente en una de las atracciones naturales más comentadas del país después de que sus aguas adquirieran un intenso color turquesa, atrayendo viajeros curiosos, fotógrafos, observadores ambientales y familias de distintas regiones.

El fenómeno ocurre en la Laguna de Alegría, un lago volcánico ubicado dentro del cráter del volcán Tecapa, en el departamento de Usulután, aproximadamente a 130 kilómetros al este de San Salvador. Conocida históricamente por sus aguas sulfurosas y sus constantes cambios minerales, la laguna suele modificar ocasionalmente su color dependiendo de la actividad volcánica, las lluvias, la luz solar, la presencia de algas y la concentración de minerales. Sin embargo, residentes y autoridades turísticas aseguran que el actual tono turquesa es uno de los más impactantes vistos en los últimos años.

Imágenes y videos de la laguna comenzaron a viralizarse rápidamente en redes sociales durante mayo de 2026, provocando una ola de turismo interno y renovando el interés internacional por los paisajes volcánicos salvadoreños. Videos grabados con drones muestran el lago brillando en tonos azul verdoso intenso, rodeado de montañas cubiertas de neblina, plantaciones de café y terreno volcánico.

Científicos explican que la coloración inusual probablemente está relacionada con un aumento en la concentración de azufre combinado con reflejos solares y cambios químicos en el agua dentro del cráter volcánico. Fenómenos similares ocurren en lagos geotérmicos y volcánicos alrededor del mundo, incluyendo destinos en Islandia, Nueva Zelanda, Indonesia, Costa Rica y Japón. Expertos del Ministerio de Medio Ambiente de El Salvador continúan monitoreando la laguna para garantizar que no exista riesgo volcánico inmediato asociado a los cambios.

La laguna se encuentra aproximadamente a 1.200 metros sobre el nivel del mar y desde hace décadas está rodeada de leyendas, folclore e historias indígenas. Tradiciones locales llegaron a llamarla “La Alegría de los Brujos” debido a los misteriosos vapores y minerales que emergen desde el interior del cráter.

Autoridades turísticas reportan un fuerte incremento de visitantes desde que la laguna cambió de color. Hoteles, restaurantes, guías turísticos y operadores de transporte en pueblos cercanos han experimentado un aumento considerable de actividad en las últimas semanas. Muchos salvadoreños están viajando hacia la zona para realizar excursiones, senderismo, fotografía y turismo ecológico.

La creciente popularidad de la laguna también refleja la transformación turística más amplia que vive El Salvador. En los últimos años, el país ha promovido agresivamente rutas volcánicas, surf, ecoturismo y destinos culturales como parte de una estrategia para cambiar su imagen internacional. El número de visitantes internacionales ha aumentado significativamente tras mejoras en seguridad y expansión de infraestructura turística.

Funcionarios del Instituto Salvadoreño de Turismo señalan que los destinos vinculados al turismo de naturaleza y aventura están creciendo especialmente entre viajeros jóvenes y turistas regionales provenientes de Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica y México.

La región del volcán Tecapa ofrece además mucho más que la laguna. Los visitantes pueden explorar fincas cafeteras, aguas termales, miradores montañosos, mercados artesanales y pueblos tradicionales conocidos por sus pupusas, café local y artesanías.

Sin embargo, grupos ambientalistas advierten sobre los riesgos del sobreturismo si el crecimiento de visitantes continúa sin control. Organizaciones de conservación están solicitando mejoras en manejo de residuos, mantenimiento de senderos, regulación de acceso y protección ecológica alrededor del lago volcánico para evitar daños ambientales.

Investigadores también recuerdan que el extraordinario color turquesa podría no ser permanente. Debido a que los lagos volcánicos son ecosistemas altamente dinámicos, la concentración mineral y la apariencia visual pueden cambiar nuevamente dependiendo de las lluvias, la actividad geotérmica y las condiciones estacionales. Esa incertidumbre ha aumentado aún más el interés público.

Para muchos viajeros, sin embargo, la atracción va más allá de la ciencia. La laguna ofrece una experiencia visual casi surrealista: un brillante cráter turquesa escondido entre las montañas volcánicas de uno de los países más pequeños de Centroamérica.

Mientras los viajeros buscan cada vez más destinos poco conocidos y experiencias naturales fuera de los circuitos turísticos saturados, lugares como la Laguna de Alegría comienzan a captar atención internacional.

Y por ahora, en las alturas volcánicas de El Salvador, una laguna turquesa continúa transformándose silenciosamente en uno de los fenómenos turísticos más inesperados de Centroamérica en 2026.
