A Hidden Lagoon in El Salvador Has Turned Turquoise — and Travelers Are Racing to See It

An Unusual Natural Transformation Is Drawing Visitors to One of Central America’s Most Unexpected New Attractions

In the mountains of eastern El Salvador, a quiet volcanic lagoon has suddenly become one of the country’s most talked-about natural attractions after its waters transformed into an intense turquoise color, attracting curious travelers, photographers, environmental observers, and local families from across the region.

The phenomenon is taking place at Laguna de Alegría, a volcanic crater lake located inside the Tecapa Volcano in the department of Usulután, approximately 130 kilometers east of San Salvador. Known historically for its sulfuric waters and changing mineral composition, the lagoon periodically shifts in color depending on volcanic activity, rainfall, sunlight, algae presence, and mineral concentration. However, residents and tourism officials say the current turquoise tone is among the most visually striking transformations seen in recent years.

Images and videos of the lagoon spread rapidly across social media during May 2026, triggering a wave of domestic tourism and renewed international attention toward El Salvador’s volcanic landscapes. Drone footage shared online shows the crater lake glowing in vivid blue-green tones surrounded by misty mountains, coffee plantations, and volcanic terrain.

Scientists explain that the unusual coloration is likely linked to increased sulfur concentration combined with sunlight reflection and changes in water chemistry inside the volcanic crater. Similar phenomena occur in geothermal and volcanic lakes around the world, including destinations in Iceland, New Zealand, Indonesia, Costa Rica, and Japan. Experts from El Salvador’s Ministry of Environment continue monitoring the lagoon to ensure there is no immediate volcanic risk associated with the changes.

The lagoon itself sits at approximately 1,200 meters above sea level and has long been surrounded by legends, folklore, and Indigenous stories. Local traditions historically referred to the lagoon as “La Alegría de los Brujos” — “The Joy of the Witches” — due to the mysterious vapors and mineral-rich waters emerging from the crater.

Tourism authorities report a sharp increase in visitors since the lagoon changed color. Hotels, restaurants, local guides, and transportation operators in nearby towns have experienced a noticeable rise in activity over recent weeks. Many Salvadorans are now traveling to the area for weekend excursions, hiking, photography, and ecological tourism.

The growing popularity of the lagoon also highlights El Salvador’s broader tourism transformation. In recent years, the country has aggressively promoted surf tourism, volcano routes, ecotourism, and cultural destinations as part of a wider effort to reshape its international image. Visitor numbers to El Salvador have increased significantly following improvements in security and expanded tourism infrastructure.

Officials from the Salvadoran Tourism Institute note that destinations connected to nature and adventure tourism are experiencing especially strong growth among younger travelers and regional visitors from Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Mexico.

The Tecapa region itself offers far more than the lagoon alone. Travelers visiting Laguna de Alegría can also explore nearby coffee farms, thermal springs, mountain viewpoints, artisan markets, and traditional Salvadoran villages known for pupusas, locally grown coffee, and handicrafts.

Environmental groups, however, warn about the risks of overtourism if visitor growth remains unmanaged. Conservationists are urging authorities to improve waste management, visitor controls, trail maintenance, and ecological protections around the volcanic lake in order to avoid environmental degradation.

Researchers also emphasize that the lagoon’s extraordinary color may not remain permanent. Because volcanic crater lakes are highly dynamic ecosystems, mineral concentrations and visual appearance can shift again depending on rainfall, geothermal activity, and seasonal conditions. That uncertainty has only increased public fascination.

For many visitors, however, the attraction goes beyond science. The lagoon offers a rare visual experience that feels almost surreal — a luminous turquoise crater hidden inside the volcanic mountains of one of Central America’s smallest countries.

As travelers increasingly search for lesser-known destinations and unique natural experiences beyond overcrowded global tourism hotspots, places like Laguna de Alegría are beginning to capture international attention.

And for now, deep inside the volcanic highlands of El Salvador, a turquoise lagoon continues quietly transforming into one of the region’s most unexpected travel phenomena of 2026.
