Spirit Airlines atravessa um dos momentos mais difíceis de sua história recente, mas mesmo em meio a perdas financeiras, incertezas corporativas e forte pressão competitiva, as autoridades de aviação dos Estados Unidos parecem determinadas a evitar que a companhia desapareça completamente de Nova York, um dos mercados aéreos mais importantes e lucrativos do mundo.

Novos relatórios revelaram que a Administração Federal de Aviação (FAA) está avaliando mecanismos regulatórios para manter a presença da Spirit Airlines no aeroporto LaGuardia, onde slots de pouso e decolagem representam alguns dos ativos mais valiosos de toda a aviação comercial americana.

A situação acontece em um momento especialmente desafiador para a indústria aérea global.

A Spirit Airlines acumulou perdas superiores a US$ 1 bilhão nos últimos anos após o fracasso de sua tentativa de fusão com a JetBlue, o aumento dos custos operacionais, inflação, problemas nos motores Pratt & Whitney que afetaram parte de sua frota Airbus e crescente pressão competitiva dentro do segmento de companhias low-cost.

Apesar da crise, a Spirit continua sendo uma peça relevante dentro do ecossistema aéreo americano. Antes das dificuldades recentes, a companhia transportava mais de 40 milhões de passageiros por ano, consolidando-se como uma das principais empresas ultra low-cost dos Estados Unidos, especialmente em rotas entre Flórida, Caribe e América Latina.

Atualmente, American Airlines, Delta, United e Southwest controlam cerca de 80% do mercado aéreo doméstico dos Estados Unidos, enquanto companhias de baixo custo vêm enfrentando dificuldades operacionais e financeiras cada vez maiores após a pandemia.

A permanência da Spirit também impacta diretamente o turismo, o emprego e a acessibilidade aérea para passageiros de renda média e baixa que dependem de tarifas econômicas para viajar pelo país.

Enquanto isso, a aviação global continua enfrentando profundas transformações estruturais. O setor lida simultaneamente com aumento dos preços dos combustíveis, atrasos na produção de aeronaves Boeing e Airbus, escassez global de pilotos e novas pressões provocadas por tensões geopolíticas internacionais.
