Explore the Tambopata Amazon Reserve

Experience a guided 4-day expedition through the Peruvian Amazon and discover one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth.

Explore the heart of the Tambopata National Reserve, one of the most biodiverse places on the planet, located in Peru’s Madre de Dios region. Several specialized tour operators offer guided rainforest expeditions that allow travelers to explore the Amazon jungle, navigate the Tambopata River, observe extraordinary wildlife, and stay in ecolodges surrounded by pristine rainforest. The adventure begins in Puerto Maldonado, the main gateway to Peru’s Amazon Basin. From there, travelers continue by road before boarding a motorized canoe that follows the Tambopata River deep into the rainforest, where the expedition begins among towering trees, tropical wildlife, and one of the world’s richest natural environments.

What Is the Experience Like?

This expedition combines guided rainforest walks, river excursions, wildlife observation, and environmental education led by expert naturalist guides. Over several days, visitors explore jungle trails, take nighttime wildlife excursions, visit canopy observation towers, and discover the complex ecosystem that supports thousands of plant and animal species. Beyond adventure, the experience provides a deeper understanding of Amazon conservation and the importance of protecting one of the planet’s most valuable natural habitats.

Location

The Tambopata National Reserve is located in the Madre de Dios region of southeastern Peru, near the borders with Bolivia and Brazil. Covering nearly 275,000 hectares, the reserve protects vast areas of tropical rainforest and forms part of one of South America’s most important conservation corridors. Access begins in Puerto Maldonado, a city connected by air with Lima and Cusco, before continuing into the rainforest by vehicle and boat.

What Places Does the Tour Visit?

Depending on the operator and itinerary, the expedition may include visits to:
• Tambopata River.
• Tambopata National Reserve.
• Chuncho Clay Lick.
• Rainforest canopy observation towers.
• Interpretive jungle trails.
• Amazonian lakes and lagoons.
• Wildlife observation areas.
• Primary rainforest ecosystems.

One of the highlights of the journey is the famous Chuncho Clay Lick, where hundreds of macaws and dozens of parrot species gather shortly after sunrise to feed on mineral-rich clay, creating one of the Amazon’s most spectacular wildlife displays.

Wildlife You May See

Tambopata is home to an extraordinary concentration of wildlife. During the expedition, visitors may encounter:
• Scarlet macaws and other parrot species.
• Toucans.
• Harpy eagles.
• Capuchin monkeys.
• Squirrel monkeys.
• Howler monkeys.
• Capybaras.
• Caimans.
• Turtles.
• Giant river otters.
• More than 600 bird species.
• With luck, the elusive jaguar.

What Is Typically Included?

Most guided expeditions include:

• Airport transfers from Puerto Maldonado.
• Land and river transportation.
• Ecolodge accommodations.
• All meals during the expedition.
• Professional bilingual naturalist guides.
• Day and night jungle excursions.
• Entrance fees to Tambopata National Reserve.
• Basic equipment required for activities.

Duration

The most popular itinerary lasts 4 days and 3 nights, although operators also offer shorter programs of 2 days and longer expeditions lasting up to 6 days or more for travelers seeking a deeper Amazon experience.

Difficulty Level

Easy to Moderate. Most activities involve guided walks on jungle trails, river navigation, and wildlife observation suitable for travelers with average fitness levels.

Best Time to Go

The dry season, from May through October, offers excellent conditions for hiking and wildlife observation. During the rainy season, from November through April, the rainforest becomes even greener, rivers rise, and amphibians, reptiles, and many bird species become especially active.

Approximate Price

Packages generally start at around US$300 per person for a 4-day, 3-night expedition, although prices vary depending on the operator, accommodation level, itinerary length, and included services.
