Groenlandia le dice “no significa no” a las crecientes ambiciones árticas de Trump hoy

Protestas masivas estallan mientras los groenlandeses rechazan la creciente presión e influencia de Estados Unidos en el Ártico

Cientos de groenlandeses se reunieron esta semana frente al nuevo consulado ampliado de Estados Unidos en Nuuk coreando un mensaje que ya resuena en todo el Ártico: “No significa no.” Portando banderas rojas y blancas de Groenlandia y pancartas con frases como “Groenlandia pertenece a los groenlandeses” y “EE.UU., deténganse”, los manifestantes protestaron contra lo que muchos habitantes de la isla consideran un renovado intento estadounidense de expandir su influencia política y estratégica sobre su territorio.

Las protestas estallaron durante la inauguración de la nueva misión diplomática estadounidense en la capital groenlandesa, un evento rodeado de controversia debido a la histórica obsesión de Donald Trump con la isla ártica. El primer ministro de Groenlandia, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, y varias figuras políticas importantes rechazaron asistir a la ceremonia, enviando una clara señal de incomodidad frente a la creciente presencia de Washington.

Para muchos groenlandeses, el consulado ya representa mucho más que un edificio diplomático. Se ha convertido en símbolo de presión geopolítica, ambición extranjera y del temor de que el futuro de Groenlandia esté siendo discutido por grandes potencias en lugar de por los propios groenlandeses.

La tensión no surgió de la nada. Desde su regreso al poder, Donald Trump reactivó su polémico interés por Groenlandia, un territorio autónomo dentro del Reino de Dinamarca estratégicamente ubicado entre Norteamérica y Europa. Trump sorprendió al mundo por primera vez en 2019 cuando propuso públicamente que Estados Unidos comprara Groenlandia a Dinamarca, una idea que Copenhague rechazó inmediatamente calificándola de absurda. Sin embargo, el tema nunca desapareció completamente.

En los últimos meses, Washington intensificó el acercamiento diplomático, las conversaciones militares y las negociaciones árticas relacionadas con Groenlandia. El enviado especial de Trump para la isla, el gobernador de Luisiana Jeff Landry, llegó esta semana a Nuuk en una visita no invitada y altamente controversial que aumentó aún más las tensiones. Durante el viaje, Landry declaró que había llegado el momento de que Estados Unidos “volviera a dejar su huella” en Groenlandia, comentarios que muchos habitantes interpretaron como paternalistas y amenazantes.

La reacción fue inmediata. Manifestantes acusaron a la administración Trump de intentar rodear las instituciones democráticas groenlandesas utilizando diplomacia blanda, promesas económicas y presión estratégica para expandir el control estadounidense en el Ártico. Algunas pancartas describían el nuevo consulado como un “caballo de Troya MAGA”, mientras otras se burlaban del eslogan trumpista con gorras rojas que decían: “Make America Go Away.”

Las protestas también reflejan algo mucho más profundo que un desacuerdo diplomático. La población de Groenlandia — unas 57.000 personas, de las cuales aproximadamente el 90% son inuit o de ascendencia mixta inuit-danesa — ha pasado décadas equilibrando autonomía, historia colonial, dependencia económica e identidad nacional. La mayoría habla kalaallisut, una lengua inuit, y muchos consideran que su lucha por la autodeterminación está inseparablemente ligada a la supervivencia indígena en el Ártico.

Aunque Groenlandia sigue formando parte oficialmente de Dinamarca, obtuvo autogobierno en 1979 y amplió su autonomía en 2009, incluyendo control sobre la mayoría de sus asuntos internos. La posibilidad de una futura independencia sigue viva dentro de la política groenlandesa, pero los acontecimientos recientes muestran que muchos habitantes temen quedar atrapados entre grandes potencias — especialmente Estados Unidos, Dinamarca, Rusia y China — que compiten por influencia en un Ártico en rápida transformación.

El cambio climático incrementó dramáticamente la importancia estratégica de Groenlandia. A medida que el hielo ártico se derrite, nuevas rutas marítimas, corredores militares, oportunidades turísticas y enormes reservas de minerales críticos comienzan a hacerse más accesibles. Se cree que Groenlandia posee importantes depósitos de uranio, cobalto, litio, cobre, grafito y tierras raras esenciales para baterías, vehículos eléctricos, energías renovables y tecnologías militares avanzadas.

Esa realidad transformó a Groenlandia de un territorio remoto a una de las regiones estratégicamente más valiosas del planeta. Estados Unidos ya opera la Base Espacial Pituffik — anteriormente Base Aérea Thule — en el norte de Groenlandia, una de las instalaciones militares árticas más importantes de Washington. Funcionarios estadounidenses consideran la isla clave para la detección de misiles, vigilancia ártica, sistemas defensivos de la OTAN y la futura competencia geopolítica con Rusia y China.

Muchos groenlandeses, sin embargo, sostienen que las potencias extranjeras hablan de la isla principalmente en términos militares y de extracción minera, ignorando los deseos de quienes realmente viven allí.

La memoria histórica también juega un papel poderoso en las tensiones actuales. Los groenlandeses todavía cargan profundas heridas relacionadas con políticas coloniales danesas, campañas forzadas de modernización, separación de niños indígenas y abusos médicos ocurridos durante el siglo XX. La indignación reciente aumentó después de que funcionarios groenlandeses criticaran a un médico estadounidense que acompañaba al enviado de Trump y afirmó querer evaluar necesidades médicas locales. El ministro de Salud de Groenlandia respondió que los groenlandeses no son “sujetos experimentales” de potencias extranjeras.

Las manifestaciones en Nuuk forman parte de un movimiento de protesta mucho más amplio que ha crecido durante 2026. A comienzos de año, miles de personas marcharon en Groenlandia y Dinamarca en lo que se convirtió en una de las mayores protestas de la historia groenlandesa. Se estima que aproximadamente una cuarta parte de la población de Nuuk participó en movilizaciones bajo el lema “Hands Off Greenland”.

La frase “No significa no” se ha convertido ahora en una declaración política de autodeterminación ártica. Los organizadores afirman que el mensaje es deliberadamente directo porque consideran que Groenlandia ya ha dejado clara su posición repetidamente ante Washington.

“Nuestro gobierno ya le dijo a Donald Trump y a su administración que Groenlandia no está en venta”, declaró el organizador Aqqalukkuluk Fontain frente al consulado.

Analistas advierten que la crisis podría afectar significativamente las relaciones dentro de la OTAN y la diplomacia ártica. Dinamarca sigue siendo uno de los aliados más cercanos de Estados Unidos, pero la retórica agresiva de Trump sobre Groenlandia ha alarmado cada vez más a gobiernos europeos preocupados también por la militarización rusa del Ártico. La situación además complica delicadas negociaciones entre Copenhague, Nuuk y Washington relacionadas con defensa, inversiones y explotación minera.

Para los propios groenlandeses, sin embargo, el tema trasciende la geopolítica. Muchos ven las protestas como una lucha por dignidad, soberanía indígena y el derecho a decidir su propio futuro en un siglo donde el cambio climático transforma el Ártico más rápido que casi cualquier otra región del planeta.

La isla ártica puede ser pequeña en población, pero hoy se encuentra en el centro de una de las nuevas líneas de tensión geopolítica del mundo. Y los groenlandeses parecen decididos a dejar claro un mensaje: el futuro de Groenlandia no será decidido en Washington, Moscú, Pekín o Bruselas, sino en Groenlandia misma.
