A aposta verde do México: 300 milhões de árvores para restaurar ecossistemas

Um novo pacto ambiental busca reconectar florestas, corredores de vida selvagem e comunidades rurais em uma nação biodiversa

O México lançou uma das maiores iniciativas de restauração ecológica das Américas com um novo acordo que pretende plantar quase 300 milhões de árvores e plantas nativas em áreas naturais protegidas durante 2026. A estratégia, impulsionada pelo programa federal “Sembrando Vida” em parceria com autoridades ambientais, busca não apenas recuperar ecossistemas degradados, mas também redefinir a relação entre conservação, economias rurais e resiliência climática.

O projeto será concentrado na restauração de 32 áreas naturais protegidas distribuídas em 24 estados mexicanos e mais de 600 municípios, abrangendo ecossistemas que vão de florestas tropicais e manguezais até florestas nebulosas e regiões semiáridas. Autoridades afirmam que a iniciativa envolverá mais de 18 mil viveiros comunitários responsáveis pela produção de espécies nativas adaptadas a cada região, capazes de restaurar a biodiversidade enquanto melhoram a qualidade do solo e a retenção de água.

No centro do plano está o conceito de “corredores bioculturais”, conexões ecológicas projetadas para permitir que espécies se movam entre habitats fragmentados ao mesmo tempo em que integram sistemas agrícolas tradicionais mantidos há gerações por comunidades indígenas e rurais. Na Península de Yucatán, o esforço busca reconectar zonas ecológicas entre reservas como a Calakmul Biosphere Reserve e a Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, regiões internacionalmente reconhecidas por sua biodiversidade e importância para o ecoturismo.

Autoridades ambientais argumentam que restaurar a conectividade tornou-se cada vez mais urgente à medida que mudanças climáticas, expansão urbana, agricultura industrial e desmatamento ilegal continuam fragmentando ecossistemas em todo o México. Segundo dados florestais nacionais, o país perdeu mais de 4,6 milhões de hectares de floresta desde 2001, com danos significativos concentrados nos estados do sudeste, incluindo Campeche, Quintana Roo e Yucatán.

O México permanece como uma das nações megadiversas do planeta, abrigando milhares de espécies endêmicas e centenas de áreas naturais protegidas federalmente. No entanto, os esforços de conservação há muito enfrentam tensões entre proteção ambiental e sobrevivência econômica das comunidades rurais. O novo pacto tenta unir essas prioridades ao oferecer apoio financeiro a pequenos agricultores que cultivam e mantêm árvores por meio de sistemas agroflorestais que combinam cultivos agrícolas, árvores frutíferas e regeneração florestal.

Defensores da iniciativa descrevem o projeto como um possível modelo de adaptação climática para a América Latina. O reflorestamento e a restauração de ecossistemas são cada vez mais vistos globalmente como ferramentas não apenas para captura de carbono, mas também para reduzir erosão, estabilizar ciclos hídricos, proteger polinizadores e limitar impactos de secas e ondas extremas de calor. Cientistas destacam que restaurar ecossistemas nativos pode fortalecer a resiliência ambiental e social ao mesmo tempo.

Entretanto, o programa também gerou debates entre pesquisadores ambientais e organizações conservacionistas. Análises anteriores do “Sembrando Vida” alertaram que certas estruturas de subsídio acabaram incentivando desmatamentos em algumas regiões, já que agricultores podiam receber benefícios ao replantar áreas previamente desmatadas. Críticos afirmam que iniciativas massivas de plantio de árvores podem se tornar contraproducentes se priorizarem números em vez de gestão ecológica de longo prazo.

A nova estratégia dentro das áreas protegidas parece representar parcialmente uma resposta a essas críticas. Ao concentrar esforços de restauração em zonas reguladas por normas ambientais e enfatizar espécies nativas, autoridades esperam fortalecer os resultados ecológicos e reduzir os riscos associados a projetos de reflorestamento monocultural.

Além da ecologia, a iniciativa também reflete uma realidade política e econômica mais ampla na América Latina: a preservação ambiental depende cada vez mais da capacidade das populações locais de sobreviver economicamente dentro das paisagens protegidas. Em muitas regiões rurais, conservação já não significa apenas restringir atividades humanas, mas criar meios de vida sustentáveis capazes de evitar migração, desmatamento ilegal ou degradação territorial.

As florestas mexicanas também desempenham um papel essencial na biodiversidade continental. Regiões protegidas como a El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve, florestas nebulosas do centro do país e reservas tropicais da Península de Yucatán sustentam aves migratórias, onças, polinizadores, anfíbios e sistemas hídricos dos quais milhões de pessoas dependem. Cientistas alertam que a fragmentação desses ecossistemas pode acelerar o colapso da biodiversidade em regiões mais amplas da América do Norte e Central.

À medida que as temperaturas globais aumentam e eventos climáticos extremos se intensificam, governos ao redor do mundo recorrem cada vez mais a grandes programas de restauração ambiental. Ainda assim, o novo pacto ambiental mexicano evidencia uma realidade crescente: plantar árvores, sozinho, já não basta. O futuro da conservação poderá depender da capacidade de recuperar ecossistemas inteiros — junto com as comunidades que vivem dentro deles.
