A New Era of Soccer Travel Is Emerging Across the United States

Football Is Transforming the Way Travelers Explore North America

Soccer tourism in the United States is beginning to evolve into something far larger than simply attending matches. As preparations accelerate for the 2026 FIFA World Cup across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, cities, transportation systems, museums, hotels, and entire communities are starting to reshape themselves around a new kind of travel experience built around football culture, entertainment, and international events.

One of the clearest examples is the newly inaugurated Arthur M. Blank U.S. Soccer National Training Center near Atlanta, Georgia — the first permanent national headquarters in the history of U.S. Soccer. The massive complex includes professional-grade fields, high-performance facilities, public fan spaces, and training environments designed not only for elite athletes, but also for visitors and future international tournaments.

The transformation extends far beyond stadiums. Host cities such as Atlanta, Kansas City, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, and Mexico City are increasingly positioning themselves as football travel destinations where sports blend with nightlife, gastronomy, music, museums, and urban culture. Visitors attending the World Cup may eventually experience North America through interconnected multi-city journeys centered around football.

Kansas City, for example, has emerged as one of the tournament’s most unexpected hotspots. Analysts point to its growing football culture, modern infrastructure, barbecue scene, live music, and central geographic location as reasons why several national teams could choose the city as a training base during the competition.

Meanwhile, companies such as Airbnb are developing immersive fan experiences connected to the World Cup. Travelers may participate in private football sessions, visit interactive fan zones, attend live events, and explore local neighborhoods alongside residents in host cities.

Smaller destinations are also trying to benefit from the football boom. Communities outside major metropolitan areas are investing in FIFA-recognized training facilities surrounded by nature, quieter environments, and regional cultural experiences. In some cases, these projects may eventually create entirely new tourism economies linked to future international sporting events.

Transportation systems are adapting as well. Airport expansions, rail projects, shuttle systems, and new public transit strategies are being designed specifically to manage the enormous movement of visitors expected during the tournament. Analysts estimate that the World Cup could generate tens of billions of dollars in economic activity across North America.

Museums and cultural institutions are also embracing football as a global cultural phenomenon. In New York, for example, the Paley Museum plans to organize screenings, exhibitions, gaming events, documentaries, and public fan experiences tied to the tournament.

For travelers, this means future football trips may look very different from traditional sports tourism. Instead of visiting a single stadium, visitors could increasingly combine matches with national parks, music festivals, food experiences, museums, road trips, and nightlife across an entire continent.

The 2026 World Cup arrives during a moment when global tourism is increasingly driven by experiences rather than destinations alone. Sporting events are becoming immersive cultural ecosystems that combine entertainment, social media, travel, and identity far beyond the game itself.

Still, experts warn that the scale of the tournament may also generate logistical challenges involving accommodation costs, transportation capacity, ticket demand, and urban infrastructure pressure. Discussions surrounding affordability and accessibility have already emerged as FIFA and local organizers continue preparations.

Even so, the magnitude of investment and planning reveals how football is rapidly transforming tourism in North America. What was once considered a niche sports market in the United States is evolving into one of the continent’s most influential travel and cultural industries.
