O Brasil começa a proteger uma das últimas tribos isoladas do mundo

A demarcação do território Kawahiva pode se tornar um ponto de inflexão para a sobrevivência indígena na Amazônia

Nas profundezas de uma das regiões mais isoladas da Amazônia brasileira, agentes do governo começaram a instalar marcos físicos em centenas de milhares de hectares de floresta para proteger um dos últimos povos indígenas não contatados do planeta. Após quase três décadas de atrasos, disputas judiciais, pressão política e avanço do desmatamento, o Brasil iniciou oficialmente a demarcação do território indígena Kawahiva do Rio Pardo — um movimento que especialistas descrevem como uma corrida contra o tempo pela sobrevivência do povo nômade Kawahiva. Os Kawahiva estão entre as comunidades indígenas não contatadas mais vulneráveis ainda existentes na Terra. Vivendo entre os estados brasileiros de Mato Grosso e Amazonas, o grupo sobrevive há gerações evitando contato externo e movendo-se constantemente pela floresta. Antropólogos e agentes da Funai afirmam que os Kawahiva raramente permanecem muito tempo em um mesmo local devido a décadas de pressão violenta causada por madeireiros ilegais, fazendeiros, mineradores e invasores de terra que avançam cada vez mais sobre a Amazônia. O território recentemente demarcado cobre aproximadamente 410 mil hectares de floresta tropical e pretende criar uma barreira legal e física permanente contra o desmatamento e a exploração econômica. A Fundação Nacional dos Povos Indígenas, conhecida como Funai, confirmou que as operações oficiais de marcação territorial começaram neste mês após anos de burocracia paralisada e disputas judiciais ligadas principalmente a interesses do agronegócio. Para as organizações de direitos indígenas, o momento é histórico — mas também frágil. A Survival International, uma das organizações que lideram a campanha de proteção dos Kawahiva, alertou que o processo precisa ser concluído rapidamente porque futuras mudanças políticas podem voltar a ameaçar as políticas de demarcação indígena no Brasil. Ativistas temem que governos alinhados ao agronegócio possam enfraquecer ou interromper as proteções antes que o território receba reconhecimento legal definitivo. (survivalinternational.org)

A existência dos Kawahiva foi oficialmente confirmada apenas em 1999, embora evidências indiquem que o grupo possa descender de comunidades indígenas deslocadas há séculos durante processos de colonização e conflitos territoriais na Amazônia. Como evitam contato direto com pessoas externas, grande parte do conhecimento sobre eles vem de pegadas, acampamentos abandonados, cestos trançados, flechas, redes e raras imagens aéreas registradas durante expedições de monitoramento. Autoridades brasileiras e especialistas indígenas afirmam que a demarcação territorial não é apenas simbólica. Na Amazônia, territórios indígenas claramente protegidos são considerados uma das barreiras mais eficazes contra o desmatamento. Estudos e dados governamentais mostram repetidamente que terras indígenas mantêm algumas das menores taxas de desmatamento do Brasil, mesmo em regiões fortemente pressionadas pela agricultura e por indústrias ilegais de extração. O território Kawahiva está localizado em uma das fronteiras ambientais mais disputadas da América do Sul. Redes ilegais de exploração madeireira, expansão pecuária, mineração e projetos de infraestrutura continuam avançando para áreas remotas da floresta. Organizações de direitos humanos alertam que povos não contatados enfrentam extrema vulnerabilidade porque frequentemente não possuem imunidade contra doenças comuns externas e podem sofrer colapso cultural ou violência após contatos forçados. O novo processo de demarcação também possui enorme importância simbólica para o próprio Brasil. Durante o governo Jair Bolsonaro, as demarcações indígenas desaceleraram drasticamente enquanto proteções ambientais enfraqueceram em grandes partes da Amazônia. Desde o retorno ao poder, o presidente Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva tenta restaurar proteções ambientais e indígenas, embora ativistas afirmem que a aplicação das medidas ainda é inconsistente e insuficientemente financiada em muitas regiões. Funcionários da Funai afirmam que o processo agora inclui a instalação de marcos geodésicos e a criação de zonas de amortecimento destinadas a reduzir a pressão ambiental nas bordas da reserva. As autoridades também reconhecem que os riscos de segurança continuam elevados devido a conflitos fundiários e atividades criminosas ligadas a economias ilegais de extração na região. A história dos Kawahiva reflete uma luta muito maior que atravessa toda a bacia amazônica. Segundo organizações e pesquisadores, o Brasil ainda possui dezenas de grupos indígenas isolados cujos territórios permanecem parcialmente protegidos, disputados ou insuficientemente monitorados.
