Brasil comienza a proteger a una de las últimas tribus no contactadas del mundo

La demarcación del territorio Kawahiva podría convertirse en un punto de inflexión para la supervivencia indígena en la Amazonía

En lo profundo de una de las regiones más aisladas de la Amazonía brasileña, agentes gubernamentales comenzaron a colocar marcadores físicos a través de cientos de miles de hectáreas de selva para proteger a uno de los últimos pueblos indígenas no contactados del planeta. Después de casi tres décadas de retrasos, disputas legales, presión política y creciente deforestación, Brasil inició oficialmente la demarcación del territorio indígena Kawahiva do Rio Pardo, un movimiento que expertos describen como una carrera contra el tiempo para la supervivencia del pueblo nómada Kawahiva. Los Kawahiva están entre las comunidades indígenas no contactadas más vulnerables que aún existen en la Tierra. Viviendo entre los estados brasileños de Mato Grosso y Amazonas, el grupo ha sobrevivido durante generaciones evitando el contacto exterior y desplazándose constantemente por la selva. Antropólogos y agentes de Funai afirman que los Kawahiva rara vez permanecen mucho tiempo en un mismo lugar debido a décadas de presión violenta por parte de madereros ilegales, ganaderos, mineros y ocupantes de tierras que avanzan cada vez más hacia el Amazonas. El territorio recientemente demarcado cubre aproximadamente 410.000 hectáreas de selva tropical y busca crear una barrera legal y física permanente contra la deforestación y la explotación económica. La Fundación Nacional de los Pueblos Indígenas de Brasil, conocida como Funai, confirmó que las operaciones oficiales de marcación fronteriza comenzaron este mes después de años de burocracia paralizada y disputas judiciales vinculadas principalmente a intereses del agronegocio. Para las organizaciones de derechos indígenas, el momento es histórico, pero también frágil. Survival International, una de las organizaciones que ha liderado la campaña de protección de los Kawahiva, advirtió que el proceso debe completarse rápidamente porque futuros cambios políticos podrían volver a amenazar las políticas de demarcación indígena en Brasil. Activistas temen que gobiernos alineados con intereses agroindustriales puedan frenar o debilitar las protecciones antes de que el territorio reciba reconocimiento legal completo. La existencia de los Kawahiva fue confirmada oficialmente apenas en 1999, aunque evidencias sugieren que el grupo podría descender de comunidades indígenas desplazadas hace siglos durante procesos de colonización y conflictos territoriales en la Amazonía. Debido a que evitan el contacto directo con personas externas, gran parte de lo que se sabe sobre ellos proviene de huellas, campamentos abandonados, cestas tejidas, flechas, hamacas y raras imágenes aéreas captadas durante expediciones de monitoreo. Funcionarios brasileños y expertos indígenas señalan que la demarcación territorial no es simplemente simbólica. En la Amazonía, los territorios indígenas claramente delimitados son considerados una de las barreras más efectivas contra la deforestación. Estudios y datos gubernamentales muestran repetidamente que las tierras indígenas mantienen algunas de las tasas de deforestación más bajas de Brasil, incluso en regiones altamente presionadas por la agricultura y las industrias extractivas ilegales. El territorio Kawahiva se encuentra en una de las fronteras ambientales más disputadas de Sudamérica. Redes ilegales de tala, expansión ganadera, minería y proyectos de infraestructura continúan avanzando hacia áreas remotas de la selva. Organizaciones de derechos humanos advierten que los pueblos no contactados enfrentan una vulnerabilidad extrema porque muchas veces no poseen inmunidad frente a enfermedades comunes externas y podrían sufrir colapso cultural o violencia tras contactos forzados. El nuevo proceso de demarcación también posee enorme importancia simbólica para Brasil. Durante la presidencia de Jair Bolsonaro, las demarcaciones indígenas se desaceleraron drásticamente mientras las protecciones ambientales se debilitaban en amplias zonas de la Amazonía. Desde su regreso al poder, el presidente Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva ha intentado restaurar las protecciones indígenas y ambientales, aunque activistas sostienen que la aplicación de las medidas sigue siendo inconsistente y con recursos insuficientes en muchas regiones. Funcionarios de Funai explican que el proceso ahora incluye la instalación de marcadores geodésicos y la creación de zonas de amortiguamiento destinadas a reducir la presión ambiental en los bordes de la reserva. Las autoridades también reconocen que los riesgos de seguridad continúan siendo elevados debido a conflictos territoriales y actividades criminales vinculadas a economías extractivas ilegales cercanas. La historia de los Kawahiva refleja una lucha mucho más amplia que atraviesa toda la cuenca amazónica. Según organizaciones y especialistas, Brasil todavía posee decenas de grupos indígenas aislados cuyos territorios permanecen parcialmente protegidos, disputados o insuficientemente monitoreados.
