Con 174 escaños, el nuevo gobierno logra control total en medio de tensiones globales

Canadá entra en una nueva fase política tras la consolidación de una mayoría parlamentaria liderada por Mark Carney, un hecho poco frecuente en la historia reciente del país y con implicaciones directas tanto a nivel interno como internacional.

El Partido Liberal alcanzó 174 de los 343 escaños en la Cámara de los Comunes, superando el umbral necesario para gobernar sin alianzas. Esta mayoría otorga al nuevo gobierno control legislativo pleno, lo que le permitirá aprobar reformas clave sin depender de acuerdos con la oposición y proyectar estabilidad política al menos hasta 2029.

El ascenso de Mark Carney ha sido atípico. Con una trayectoria consolidada como exgobernador del Banco de Canadá y del Banco de Inglaterra, llegó al liderazgo político nacional sin haber ocupado previamente cargos electivos, reemplazando a Justin Trudeau en un momento de desgaste del gobierno liberal. En menos de un año, logró revertir una desventaja significativa en encuestas y reconstruir el respaldo electoral de su partido.

Este resultado se produce en un contexto económico exigente. Canadá enfrenta presiones inflacionarias moderadas, aumento en el costo de vida y un mercado de vivienda que continúa siendo uno de los más tensionados entre economías desarrolladas. Como medida inicial, el gobierno ha optado por aliviar el impacto del precio de los combustibles mediante la suspensión temporal de ciertos impuestos, buscando contener el descontento social.

A nivel externo, la relación con Donald Trump se perfila como uno de los principales desafíos. Las tensiones comerciales, la retórica proteccionista y las diferencias en políticas energéticas han generado un clima de incertidumbre que influye directamente en la estrategia canadiense. Estados Unidos continúa siendo el principal socio comercial de Canadá, concentrando cerca del 75% de sus exportaciones, lo que limita el margen de maniobra en decisiones económicas y diplomáticas.

En respuesta, el nuevo gobierno ha comenzado a explorar una diversificación de alianzas internacionales y un fortalecimiento del comercio interno. La intención es reducir vulnerabilidades estructurales sin romper el equilibrio con Washington, una tarea compleja en un escenario global cada vez más fragmentado.

La mayoría parlamentaria también redefine el ritmo político interno. Permite acelerar proyectos en infraestructura, transición energética y desarrollo tecnológico, pero al mismo tiempo incrementa las expectativas sobre resultados concretos. Sin una oposición determinante en el Congreso, la responsabilidad del desempeño recae casi exclusivamente en el Ejecutivo.

No obstante, el proceso no ha estado exento de críticas. Sectores de la oposición han cuestionado la forma en que se consolidó la mayoría, señalando que parte del control parlamentario se logró mediante movimientos estratégicos dentro del sistema político. Este debate añade un componente de tensión institucional en un momento en que el gobierno busca proyectar estabilidad.

En el plano internacional, Canadá intenta posicionarse como un actor confiable en medio de un entorno geopolítico volátil. Conflictos en otras regiones, tensiones comerciales y cambios en el equilibrio de poder global han reforzado la importancia de países con estabilidad institucional y liderazgo técnico.

El desafío para Mark Carney es ahora transformar ese capital político en resultados tangibles. La combinación de control legislativo, presión económica y tensiones externas configura un escenario en el que cada decisión tendrá impacto más allá de las fronteras del país.

Más que una victoria electoral, la consolidación de esta mayoría marca el inicio de una etapa en la que Canadá deberá redefinir su papel en el mundo, equilibrando crecimiento, autonomía y estabilidad en un contexto internacional cada vez más incierto.
