Avistan jaguar a más de 2.200 metros en Honduras, un registro inusual que alerta a científicos

El descubrimiento en la Sierra del Merendón reaviva el debate sobre la adaptación de las especies y los corredores biológicos

No es común encontrar a un gran depredador fuera de su rango habitual, y mucho menos a más de 2.200 metros de altura. Sin embargo, eso es exactamente lo que ocurrió en la Sierra del Merendón, en el norte de Honduras, donde una cámara trampa registró la presencia de un jaguar en un ecosistema de bosque nuboso, un entorno poco frecuente para esta especie.

El registro, captado en febrero de 2026, representa uno de los pocos avistamientos documentados en alta montaña en la región y el primero en más de una década en este sistema montañoso. Según organizaciones de monitoreo, en la zona se instalaron más de 20 cámaras trampa, pero solo una logró captar al felino, lo que refleja tanto la baja densidad poblacional como el carácter extremadamente esquivo del animal.

El jaguar es el felino más grande de América y uno de los principales depredadores del continente. Históricamente, su distribución se extendía desde el sur de Estados Unidos hasta el norte de Argentina. Hoy, ha perdido cerca del 50% de su rango original debido a la deforestación, la caza y la fragmentación de su hábitat, según datos de la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza.

En condiciones normales, el jaguar habita zonas por debajo de los 1.000 metros de altitud, especialmente selvas tropicales, humedales y áreas cercanas a ríos. Su presencia en alturas superiores a los 2.000 metros es excepcional y ha sido documentada en contadas ocasiones en países como México y Bolivia, lo que convierte este caso en un dato relevante para la comunidad científica.

Una de las hipótesis más discutidas es la relación entre estos desplazamientos y los cambios ambientales. Honduras ha perdido una parte significativa de su cobertura forestal en las últimas décadas, con tasas de deforestación que, en algunas regiones, superan el 2% anual. Esta transformación reduce la disponibilidad de presas y empuja a los grandes depredadores a explorar nuevos territorios.

Sin embargo, no todo el panorama es negativo. La presencia del felino también indica que aún existen corredores biológicos funcionales. La Sierra del Merendón forma parte de un sistema ecológico que conecta áreas protegidas entre Honduras y Guatemala, permitiendo el desplazamiento de especies clave y el intercambio genético entre poblaciones.

Estos corredores son esenciales para la supervivencia del jaguar. Un macho adulto puede recorrer entre 50 y 150 kilómetros en busca de territorio o pareja, lo que exige grandes extensiones de hábitat continuo. Sin conectividad, las poblaciones quedan aisladas, aumentando el riesgo de extinción local.

El uso de cámaras trampa ha sido clave para entender estos patrones. En América Latina, este sistema de monitoreo ha permitido estimar densidades poblacionales, identificar individuos y registrar comportamientos poco documentados. En el caso de Honduras, los datos siguen siendo limitados, lo que hace que cada registro tenga un valor científico significativo.

Además del jaguar, estos monitoreos han documentado la presencia de otros felinos como pumas, ocelotes y margays, lo que sugiere que, pese a la presión humana, algunos ecosistemas mantienen niveles importantes de biodiversidad. No obstante, esta coexistencia es cada vez más frágil.

A nivel regional, Centroamérica enfrenta un desafío crítico: equilibrar desarrollo y conservación. La expansión agrícola, la ganadería y la infraestructura continúan fragmentando hábitats, mientras que los esfuerzos de protección avanzan a un ritmo más lento.

En este contexto, el avistamiento en la Sierra del Merendón no es solo un dato curioso. Es una señal compleja. Puede interpretarse como evidencia de resiliencia, pero también como indicio de presión ambiental. La diferencia entre ambas lecturas depende de lo que ocurra en los próximos años.

El desafío para los científicos y responsables de políticas públicas es claro: entender si estos movimientos representan una expansión natural del rango del jaguar o una respuesta forzada a la pérdida de su hábitat. De esa respuesta dependerá, en gran medida, el futuro de uno de los símbolos más poderosos de la biodiversidad americana.
