Los premios Oscar dejan Hollywood y se reinventan en el corazón de Los Ángeles

Un cambio histórico que redefine el futuro del cine, la transmisión global y la experiencia del espectáculo

La ceremonia más importante del cine mundial está a punto de vivir una de las transformaciones más profundas de su historia. A partir de 2029, los premios Oscar abandonarán su emblemática sede en el Dolby Theatre de Hollywood para trasladarse al Peacock Theater, ubicado en el complejo L.A. Live en el centro de Los Ángeles. No es solo un cambio de dirección: es una declaración de evolución en una industria que busca reinventarse frente a nuevas audiencias y dinámicas globales.

Durante más de dos décadas, el Dolby Theatre fue sinónimo de los Oscar. Desde 2002, este recinto en pleno Hollywood Boulevard albergó momentos icónicos del cine contemporáneo, consolidándose como un símbolo del glamour y la tradición de la industria. Sin embargo, esa era concluirá con la edición número 100 en 2028, cerrando un ciclo histórico que definió la identidad moderna del evento.

El nuevo hogar será el Peacock Theater, un recinto con capacidad para más de 7.000 personas, casi el triple del espacio disponible en el Dolby Theatre. Situado dentro del dinámico complejo L.A. Live, este lugar no solo ofrece mayor capacidad, sino también infraestructura tecnológica avanzada y un entorno diseñado para albergar eventos de escala global.

El traslado forma parte de un acuerdo estratégico a largo plazo entre la Academia de Artes y Ciencias Cinematográficas y la empresa AEG, que se extenderá hasta 2039. Esta alianza busca no solo modernizar la ceremonia, sino expandir su alcance, integrando nuevas tecnologías, espacios más amplios y una experiencia completamente rediseñada para el público global.

Pero el cambio de sede es solo una parte de una transformación mucho mayor. A partir de ese mismo año, los Oscar dejarán la televisión tradicional para transmitirse en YouTube, marcando un giro decisivo hacia el consumo digital. Esta decisión responde a la necesidad de conectar con audiencias más jóvenes y adaptarse a un ecosistema mediático donde el streaming domina el entretenimiento global.

El nuevo escenario permitirá algo que Hollywood ya no podía ofrecer con la misma eficiencia: centralizar toda la experiencia. En L.A. Live, la alfombra roja, la ceremonia, los eventos paralelos y las celebraciones podrán coexistir en un mismo entorno, rodeado de hoteles, espacios abiertos y centros de entretenimiento. Esto reduce costos logísticos, mejora la seguridad y transforma los Oscar en un evento más inmersivo y expansivo.

También hay un trasfondo urbano y cultural. El traslado refleja un cambio en el propio mapa de Los Ángeles. Mientras Hollywood enfrenta desafíos como el aumento de costos, cierres comerciales y transformaciones económicas, el centro de la ciudad emerge como un nuevo polo de eventos, preparado para recibir grandes citas globales como el Mundial, el Super Bowl y los Juegos Olímpicos de 2028.

Paradójicamente, este movimiento no es del todo nuevo. A lo largo de su historia, los Oscar han cambiado de sede en múltiples ocasiones, incluyendo espacios en el centro de Los Ángeles como el Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. En ese sentido, el regreso al downtown representa tanto una ruptura como una reconexión con sus propias raíces.

El Peacock Theater, inaugurado en 2007 y conocido anteriormente como Microsoft Theater, ya ha sido escenario de eventos de gran escala como los premios Emmy, los American Music Awards y conciertos internacionales. Su experiencia en producciones masivas lo posiciona como un espacio preparado para asumir el reto de albergar el evento más importante del cine.

Más allá de la logística, el mensaje es claro: los Oscar buscan dejar de ser un evento anclado en Hollywood para convertirse en una plataforma verdaderamente global. Más digital, más abierta, más conectada con nuevas generaciones.

El telón no cae sobre Hollywood, pero sí se desplaza. Y en ese movimiento, los Oscar no solo cambian de escenario: redefinen su lugar en el mundo.
