Mexico Faces Tension and Flight Cancellations After Death of “El Mencho”

Violence, Road Blockades, and Suspended Flights Mark a Critical New Chapter in National Security

Mexico is experiencing a period of heightened tension following the death of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), who was killed during a military operation in the state of Jalisco. The event, considered one of the most significant blows against organized crime in recent years, triggered violent reactions that impacted not only public security but also air transportation and economic activity across several regions of the country.

In the hours following the official announcement, authorities reported highway blockades, vehicle arson attacks and armed clashes in at least 20 states. The most affected areas included Jalisco, Guanajuato, Michoacán, Colima and Nayarit, where armed groups carried out coordinated actions to disrupt mobility and generate pressure.

The aviation sector was among the hardest hit. Several domestic and international airlines canceled flights to and from key destinations such as Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta due to security concerns, operational restrictions and government advisories. Operations at Guadalajara International Airport were temporarily disrupted while authorities reinforced perimeter security.

At Mexico City International Airport (AICM), although the terminal remained open, dozens of flights were canceled and multiple delays were reported, affecting thousands of passengers. Some foreign airlines even chose to divert aircraft already en route to Mexico, prioritizing the safety of crews and travelers.

Federal authorities deployed approximately 10,000 members of the Army and National Guard to contain the unrest and restore order. According to official reports, most road blockades have been cleared and air operations are gradually returning to normal, although authorities recommend continued monitoring for those planning to travel in the coming days.

Security analysts warn that the death of the CJNG leader could trigger internal restructuring within the criminal organization, potentially leading to disputes over territorial control. This scenario increases uncertainty in several strategic regions of the country, particularly those with strong tourism and commercial activity.[br br] Meanwhile, foreign governments have issued travel advisories for certain areas of Mexico, urging their citizens to remain informed and follow official guidance. The tourism sector, a key pillar of the Mexican economy, now faces the challenge of restoring international confidence after a week marked by violence and mass flight cancellations.

The situation continues to evolve. Although authorities insist that control is being restored, the country remains alert to possible new developments stemming from the criminal power shift following the fall of one of the region’s most wanted drug traffickers.
