U.S. and Ecuador Carry Out First Joint Ground Operation Against Drug Cartels

Forces From Both Countries Launch Unprecedented Offensive Against Groups Labeled “Terrorists.”

BR Quito — For the first time in recent history, the military forces of the United States and Ecuador conducted a joint ground operation targeting drug trafficking organizations that have been designated as “terrorists” by the U.S. Southern Command, the agency confirmed on Tuesday. (efe.com)

BR The U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) reported that the operation—announced on March 3, 2026—represents a new phase in security cooperation between Washington and Quito, in response to rising violence and the presence of groups combining drug trafficking, corruption, and terrorism in the region. (telemundo.com)

BR In a social media statement, SOUTHCOM emphasized that Ecuadorian and U.S. forces took “decisive measures” against the so-called narco-terrorists who “have long inflicted terror, violence, and corruption on citizens across the hemisphere.” (rpp.pe)

BR Operational details have not been publicly released for security reasons, but it was confirmed that local troops carried out most of the ground actions, supported technically, logistically, and with intelligence by U.S. military advisors. (efe.com)

BR Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa, a political ally of the U.S. administration and a strong advocate of this cooperation, had previously announced on social media that his country would enter a “new phase” in the fight against narco-terrorism and illegal mining, highlighting the priority of citizen safety. (eldeber.com.bo)

BR SOUTHCOM praised the commitment of Ecuadorian Armed Forces, emphasizing that these actions send a clear message against transnational criminal networks operating from regional territories. (radiosantafe.com)

BR Until now, military cooperation between both countries focused on attacks on vessels linked to drug trafficking in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific, but this ground operation represents a significant escalation in the fight against organized crime. (elpais.com)

BR Ecuadorian authorities have not released official figures on casualties or arrests, nor the exact locations of the operations, but reiterated their commitment to national security and regional stability, highlighting that these actions are part of a broader strategy to weaken criminal groups operating near their borders.
