Trump y el puente Gordie Howe: la llamada que desató una tormenta diplomática

Un simple teléfono, un post explosivo y tensiones entre EE. UU. y Canadá

Todo comenzó con un simple teléfono que sonó en la Casa Blanca y, pocas horas después, terminó con el presidente de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, lanzando una controvertida arremetida contra un proyecto binacional crucial: el puente internacional Gordie Howe, diseñado para conectar Detroit (Michigan) con Windsor (Ontario).

Según fuentes cercanas a la Administración, una llamada telefónica entre Trump y el secretario de Comercio, Howard Lutnick, desencadenó el episodio que luego explotaría en redes sociales. La conversación tuvo lugar tras una reunión de Lutnick con Matthew Moroun, cuya familia controla el puente Ambassador —otra conexión clave entre EE. UU. y Canadá— y que ha sido objeto de disputa por años con los promotores del nuevo cruce internacional.

Ese teléfono cambió el curso político del día: pocas horas después de la llamada, Trump publicó en Truth Social un mensaje vehemente contra Canadá y el proyecto de infraestructura, alegando que el puente “contaba con prácticamente ningún contenido estadounidense” y advirtiendo que no permitiría su apertura hasta que EE. UU. recibiera compensación y participación en la propiedad.

Sin embargo, los hechos desmienten estas afirmaciones: el puente Gordie Howe, valorado en más de 4 mil millones de dólares, fue financiado en gran parte por Canadá y se prevé que sea co‑propiedad entre Ontario y Michigan, incorporando materiales y mano de obra de ambos países.

Ante la controversia, el primer ministro canadiense, Mark Carney, contactó a Trump para aclarar la situación, enfatizando el carácter conjunto del proyecto y descartando las acusaciones del presidente estadounidense. El puente, explicó Carney, es un símbolo de cooperación binacional e integración económica, y su inauguración sigue en pie salvo cambios inesperados.

En Michigan, la gobernadora Gretchen Whitmer también rechazó las críticas infundadas de Trump, señalando que numerosos materiales y trabajadores estadounidenses han contribuido al avance de la obra. A pesar del revuelo, las autoridades de ambos lados de la frontera sostienen que la infraestructura servirá como un motor de comercio y movilidad entre EE. UU. y Canadá.

Este episodio evidencia no solo las tensiones comerciales y políticas entre EE. UU. y su principal socio del norte, sino también la forma en que un presidente puede convertir llamadas privadas en controversias públicas, transformando un simple teléfono en titulares globales y tensiones diplomáticas inesperadas.
