Panamá inicia proceso formal para que sus ciudadanos puedan viajar a EE. UU. sin visa

El Gobierno crea un grupo interinstitucional con EE. UU. para cumplir estándares y aspirar al Visa Waiver Program

El Gobierno de Panamá dio un paso formal significativo para que los ciudadanos panameños puedan viajar a Estados Unidos sin necesidad de tramitar visa consular. Para ello, se conformó un Grupo de Trabajo Interinstitucional encargado de coordinar con las autoridades estadounidenses los requisitos técnicos, operativos, migratorios y de seguridad que exige el Visa Waiver Program (VWP), programa que permite a nacionales de países participantes entrar a EE. UU. por hasta 90 días sin visa tradicional. La reunión que formalizó este proceso fue encabezada por el ministro encargado de Relaciones Exteriores, Carlos A. Hoyos, y contó con la participación de representantes de distintas instituciones del Estado, así como altos funcionarios del Departamento de Seguridad Nacional de Estados Unidos. El objetivo principal del grupo es asegurar que Panamá cumpla con los estándares de seguridad fronteriza, gestión migratoria, intercambio de información y cooperación bilateral que los Estados Unidos requieren para incluir a un país en el programa. Aunque no existe una fecha establecida para que Panamá sea aceptado en el VWP, las autoridades panameñas han destacado que el país ya cumple uno de los requisitos clave: una tasa de rechazo de visas significativamente baja, lo que lo coloca como un candidato viable para aspirar al beneficio. Más allá de la facilidad migratoria El acceso al Visa Waiver Program no solo representaría una facilidad de viaje para panameños, sino también un fortalecimiento de la relación bilateral entre ambos países. Las autoridades han señalado que este proceso forma parte de una agenda estratégica de cooperación que puede potenciar intercambios en turismo, educación, cultura y comercio entre Panamá y Estados Unidos. Hasta ahora, el programa incluye a 42 países, principalmente de Europa, Asia-Pacífico y Oceanía, además de Chile como la única nación latinoamericana incluida actualmente en el VWP. Pese a ello, las gestiones entre Panamá y Estados Unidos mantienen un ritmo sostenido para cumplir con todos los requisitos técnicos y administrativos establecidos. (infobae.com)

Últimamente, las conversaciones entre ambos gobiernos se han intensificado: el presidente José Raúl Mulino ha planteado la inclusión del país como un paso para facilitar la movilidad y fortalecer los vínculos entre las sociedades panameña y estadounidense, enfatizando que Panamá es considerado un país “amigo” por los bajos índices de rechazo de visas y la cooperación en temas de seguridad.
