Air Transat Expands Connectivity With Direct Flights to Rio de Janeiro

The Canadian Airline Launches New Strategic Routes Linking Brazil and North America

Late February 2026 marked a milestone in international air connectivity as Canadian airline Air Transat officially launched nonstop direct flights to Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) from two major Canadian hubs: Toronto (YYZ) and Montreal (YUL). These new routes not only strengthen air links between North and South America, but also position Rio de Janeiro as a strategic destination within the airline’s broader international expansion plan.

The nonstop service from Toronto began on February 4, 2026, operating two weekly frequencies (Wednesdays and Saturdays), while the Montreal–Rio route commenced on February 5, 2026, with one weekly frequency (Thursdays). Both routes are operated with Airbus A330 aircraft, designed for long-haul comfort and fuel efficiency, offering a competitive and comfortable experience for both leisure and business travelers.

With this launch, Air Transat becomes the only airline offering a nonstop flight between Montreal and Rio de Janeiro, filling a long-standing gap in direct air connectivity between the two cities. The Toronto route is scheduled to operate until June 10, 2026, while the Montreal service will run until June 4, 2026, as part of the airline’s winter 2025–2026 program.

According to company executives, the new routes represent a strategic move aimed at strengthening cultural, tourism, and family ties between Canada and Brazil. Sebastian Ponce, Air Transat’s Chief Revenue Officer, stated that the flights “create a direct bridge between Canada and Brazil, making it easier for travelers to experience Rio de Janeiro’s vibrant culture while supporting tourism and economic exchange between the two countries.”

Beyond direct connectivity, Air Transat has reinforced its presence in Brazil through an interline partnership with GOL Linhas Aéreas, allowing passengers arriving in Rio de Janeiro to connect seamlessly to more than 60 domestic destinations across Brazil under a single ticket. This agreement significantly expands travel possibilities to cities such as São Paulo, Salvador, Recife, and Belo Horizonte.

The addition of Rio de Janeiro aligns with Air Transat’s broader capacity growth strategy, which includes approximately a 6 % increase in global capacity and the launch of 14 new routes worldwide. The airline continues to focus on leisure-oriented long-haul markets with strong tourism demand and cultural appeal.

Market analysts note that interest among Canadian travelers in South American destinations—particularly Brazil—has grown steadily in recent years, driven by tourism, business travel, and visiting friends and relatives. Seasonal peaks such as Carnival and summer holidays are expected to further boost demand on the new routes.

Overall, Air Transat’s direct flights to Rio de Janeiro represent a significant step forward in North–South air connectivity, offering travelers faster journeys, greater convenience, and expanded access to Brazil, while reinforcing the airline’s position as a key player in transcontinental leisure travel.
