Calls Grow to Boycott Major U.S. Event in Protest of Trump

International figures urge fans to reconsider attending the 2026 World Cup amid political controversies.

In recent weeks, growing calls have emerged from around the world urging fans, athletes and nations to consider boycotting the 2026 FIFA World Cup matches set to take place in the United States, Canada and Mexico, especially due to controversies tied to U.S. President Donald Trump’s domestic and international policies.

Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter publicly backed a proposed fan boycott of the World Cup matches in the U.S., echoing remarks by Swiss anti-corruption expert Mark Pieth, who advised fans to avoid traveling to the United States amid ongoing political tensions and strict immigration controls.

The calls for a boycott are not limited to individual opinions. Officials in Europe, including representatives of major soccer federations in Germany and the Netherlands, have raised the idea of reconsidering their participation, citing broader concerns about President Trump’s actions on issues like foreign policy and territorial disputes. A poll in Germany suggested that nearly half of respondents would support such a boycott if the political controversies continued.

Critics argue that recent U.S. administration policies — from immigration restrictions to rhetoric around military and diplomatic actions — have created an environment that could overshadow the spirit of the sport, affecting international travel and the safety considerations of fans. Despite these debates, no national team has officially withdrawn from the tournament, and FIFA officials continue to prepare for the June–July 2026 event as planned.

Analysts note that while political boycotts of major sporting events are rare and historically often ineffective, the current discourse highlights how global politics and sport intersect, and how diplomatic tensions can influence public perception of international tournaments.
