Golden sand in emerging Zipolite, Mexico, invites total freedom under a sun without prejudice.Photo generated by ChatGPT/AI

Emerging Gay-Friendly Beaches

Emerging Destinations to Travel Freely

In a world where classic destinations like Mykonos, Sitges, or Fire Island remain unbeatable, a new generation of gay-friendly beaches is rapidly gaining ground. These emerging spots offer not only stunning natural beauty, but also an atmosphere of growing acceptance, evolving local communities, and options that blend relaxation, adventure, and nightlife without the overwhelming crowds of established hotspots. For 2025 and 2026, the rise of these destinations reflects advances in LGBTQ+ rights, investments in inclusive tourism, and the desire of many queer travelers to discover more authentic and affordable places.

The pandemic accelerated this trend: with mass tourism on pause, many regions invested in infrastructure and visibility, attracting those seeking more genuine experiences. Today, destinations across Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Eastern Europe stand out for their legislative progress, positive local attitudes, and beaches that invite freedom without prejudice.

From Zipolite to Curaçao: The New Favorites Taking Off

One of the most notable rises is Zipolite, on Mexico’s Oaxaca coast. This nude and liberal beach, known as Mexico’s first legal nude beach, has evolved from a bohemian secret into a vibrant queer gathering point. With golden sand, strong surf friendly waves, and a laid-back, clothing-optional atmosphere, Zipolite attracts a diverse mix of LGBTQ+ travelers. In recent years, it has seen an increase in gay-friendly boutique hotels, bars with drag shows, and seasonal events during high season (November to April). Its progress is partly driven by the legalization of same-sex marriage in Oaxaca and a local community that values inclusive tourism, making it a fresh alternative to Puerto Vallarta.

In the Caribbean, Curaçao emerges as an underrated gem. Part of the ABC Islands (alongside Aruba and Bonaire), this Dutch island offers beaches such as Cas Abao and Playa Lagun, with crystal clear turquoise waters and a welcoming vibe. Curaçao stands out for its high level of tolerance: same-sex marriage has been legal since 2024, and the island boasts a growing LGBTQ+ scene in Willemstad, with bars and Pride events. Its blend of Caribbean, European, and African culture combined with inclusive resorts and world-class diving positions it as an ideal option for couples and groups seeking sun without crowds.

Another standout on the rise is Durban, South Africa, with its Golden Mile and beaches like uMhlanga. South Africa was a pioneer in legalizing same-sex marriage in 2006, and Durban combines wide beaches with a vibrant and growing queer community. Events such as Durban Pride and downtown bars attract travelers from around the world, while the city also offers nearby safaris and a multicultural food scene. Despite the country’s challenges, Durban represents notable progress on the African continent.

In Europe, Thessaloniki, Greece, is gaining popularity thanks to nearby beaches like Perea and Epanomi, paired with a thriving cultural capital. Greece advanced LGBTQ+ rights with the legalization of same-sex marriage in 2024, and Thessaloniki offers a more affordable, less tourist-saturated alternative to Mykonos or Athens, with an active queer nightlife scene and Pride festivals in June.

In Asia, Mauritius is emerging as a luxury destination. After decriminalizing same-sex relationships in 2023, the island now attracts travelers with idyllic beaches such as Le Morne and Belle Mare, inclusive adults only resorts, and lush natural landscapes. Though still developing, its focus on premium tourism and growing acceptance makes it an appealing option for queer honeymoons.

Other rising destinations include Kauai, Hawaii (with remote beaches and a relaxed vibe), Myrtle Beach, South Carolina (emerging in the U.S. for its affordability and growing community), and Nosara, Costa Rica (known for pristine beaches and an LGBTQ+ expat presence). These places stand out for their balance of nature, inclusion, and reasonable prices.

Traveling to these emerging destinations offers real value: greater authenticity, reduced tourism impact, and the satisfaction of supporting communities in progress. However, always check updated safety conditions and local rights before planning. Apps like misterb&b or IGLTA guides help travelers choose safe accommodations and experiences.

In 2026, these beaches represent hope places where freedom is not just a slogan, but a daily reality under the sun.
