A New Tourist Route Connecting Major Destinations in Patagonia Is Being Paved

It Will Improve Connectivity and Boost Regional Tourism

The government of the province of Neuquén is moving forward with the full paving of Provincial Route 65, a key infrastructure project that will connect Villa Traful with National Routes 40 and 237. The work will significantly improve access to one of Argentina’s most scenic Patagonian destinations and strengthen its integration into the renowned Seven Lakes Circuit.

The project includes 58 kilometers of pavement, divided into two main stages. The first stage covers 34 kilometers, from the junction with National Route 40 to the bridge over the Minero River. This section is financed by CAF (the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean) and has already surpassed 50% completion, with an investment exceeding 30 million dollars. The second stage spans 24 kilometers, from that bridge to the Confluencia area, where it connects with National Route 237. This phase is scheduled to begin in 2026 and will be financed by the World Bank, with an estimated investment of over 35 million dollars.

Until now, access to Villa Traful—a small village with just over 700 residents—has relied largely on gravel roads that become difficult and unsafe during winter or periods of heavy rain. Once the paving is completed, year-round accessibility is expected, along with improved safety and a smoother travel experience for visitors.

The new route will fully integrate Villa Traful into the Lakes Corridor and the Seven Lakes Circuit, while also facilitating a direct connection between Villa La Angostura (via Route 237) and San Martín de los Andes (via Route 40). This creates an attractive alternative tourist circuit and encourages greater mobility between key destinations in the Andean region.

Local authorities expect the project to generate a strong economic boost for the community by increasing tourist flows and strengthening sectors such as hospitality, gastronomy, and local services. Neuquén Governor Rolando Figueroa described the initiative as one of the most strategic road infrastructure projects in the province, emphasizing its importance for improving access to one of Neuquén’s flagship tourist destinations.

Villa Traful is known for its natural attractions, including the Sunken Forest in Lake Traful, La Puntilla beach, the Mirador del Viento viewpoint, waterfalls accessible via family-friendly trails, ancient rock art sites, and trekking routes around mountain lagoons and rivers.
