Observando baleias em paz

Locais responsáveis ​​para observá-los na América do Norte

Observar baleias em estado selvagem é um dos espetáculos mais impressionantes da natureza, mas também um dos mais arriscados para os animais. Segundo a Whale and Dolphin Conservation, 78 % das populações de cetáceos no Hemisfério Norte sofreram estresse acústico ou risco de colisão devido ao turismo mal regulado na última década. Por isso, na América do Norte, surgiram destinos onde as leis são rígidas, os barcos devem manter distância obrigatória e os operadores destinam parte de seus lucros à pesquisa e conservação. Esses seis lugares permitem vivenciar a emoção de ver jubartes, baleias cinzentas, azuis e orcas sem se tornar mais um incômodo ambiental.

Um guia moderno de observação para caçadores com câmeras

Baja California Sur, México, a baleia cinzenta encontra seu santuário mais íntimo. Entre dezembro e abril, a Lagoa San Ignacio e a Baía Magdalena recebem milhares de mães com filhotes que viajam mais de dez mil quilômetros desde o Ártico. Desde 1988, é Reserva da Biosfera da UNESCO, e as pangas locais devem manter uma distância de cem metros; muitas vezes, são as próprias baleias que se aproximam por curiosidade. Os acampamentos de glamping limitam o número de visitantes diários e colaboram com cientistas que monitoram a saúde da população.

Havaí, a ilha de Maui se torna o berçário de inverno das jubartes do Pacífico Norte. Entre dezembro e maio, cerca de doze mil baleias chegam para se reproduzir nas águas quentes do Canal Auau. A Pacific Whale Foundation opera com barcos elétricos quase silenciosos e destina todos os seus lucros à pesquisa; além disso, seus naturalistas explicam em tempo real o comportamento observado, transformando cada saída em uma aula magistral de biologia marinha.

costa leste do Canadá, Terra Nova e Labrador oferecem um dos espetáculos mais diversos do Atlântico. De junho a setembro, Iceberg Alley abriga até vinte e duas espécies diferentes, incluindo baleias-azuis e jubartes que praticam técnicas de alimentação cooperativa. As regulamentações canadenses exigem uma distância de duzentos metros para as espécies mais sensíveis e o uso de hidrofones para detectar se os animais estão descansando ou se alimentando, o que ajuda a determinar se é adequado se aproximar ou recuar.

Alasca—especialmente o Parque Nacional Glacier Bay—é o único lugar nos Estados Unidos onde os barcos devem desligar os motores se uma baleia se aproximar a menos de quinhentos metros. De maio a setembro, é possível observar jubartes realizando a espetacular técnica de alimentação com redes de bolhas, e as orcas residentes caçam focas. A população de jubartes cresceu de apenas quarenta indivíduos nos anos 60 para mais de quatrocentos graças à proteção rigorosa do parque, um exemplo de recuperação que emociona quem o presencia.

Na costa oeste dos EUA, Monterey Bay é o cânion submarino que atrai as maiores baleias-azuis já registradas. De abril a dezembro, e especialmente no verão, centenas de indivíduos se alimentam de krill a poucos quilômetros da costa. A cidade foi declarada a primeira Área Patrimônio Mundial das Baleias do mundo, e muitos operadores utilizam barcos híbridos ou caiaques marinhos guiados por biólogos marinhos, oferecendo uma experiência íntima e de baixo impacto.

Quebec, o Parque Marinho Saguenay–São Lourenço é o melhor lugar no Atlântico Norte para observar baleias-azuis e belugas na mesma saída. De maio a outubro, os zodíacos de casco rígido autorizados reduzem a velocidade para dez nós e mantêm uma distância de cem metros. Muitos dos guias são pesquisadores do GREMM, narrando ao vivo os cantos captados pelos hidrofones e explicando como cada indivíduo possui uma assinatura acústica única, transformando o passeio em uma experiência científica e emocional difícil de esquecer.

Escolha o operador certo

Para garantir que a observação de baleias seja respeitosa, é essencial escolher operadores certificados pela Whale SENSE, Responsible Whale Watching ou membros da Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks & Aquariums. Evitar empresas que prometem “nadar com baleias” ou “encontros próximos garantidos” é crucial, pois essas práticas são proibidas nos Estados Unidos e Canadá. Levar binóculos, usar protetor solar seguro para recifes e lembrar que uma mudança de direção ou velocidade de uma baleia é sinal de estresse são pequenas ações que fazem diferença. Presenciar a cauda de uma jubarte levantando-se ao pôr do sol ou ouvir o canto profundo de uma baleia-azul não é apenas um privilégio passageiro; é a oportunidade de ser, por algumas horas, um hóspede silencioso em sua casa.
