Observando ballenas en paz

Lugares responsables para observarlos en América del Norte

Observar ballenas en estado salvaje es uno de los espectáculos más impresionantes de la naturaleza, pero también uno de los más riesgosos para los animales. Según Whale and Dolphin Conservation, el 78 % de las poblaciones de cetáceos en el Hemisferio Norte han experimentado estrés acústico o riesgo de colisión debido al turismo mal regulado en la última década. Por eso, en América del Norte han surgido destinos donde las leyes son estrictas, los barcos deben mantener una distancia obligatoria y los operadores destinan parte de sus ganancias a la investigación y conservación. Estos seis lugares permiten experimentar la emoción de ver jorobadas, ballenas grises, azules y orcas sin convertirse en otra molestia ambiental.

Una guía moderna de avistamiento para cazadores con cámaras

En Baja California Sur, México la ballena gris encuentra su santuario más íntimo. Entre diciembre y abril, la Laguna San Ignacio y la Bahía Magdalena reciben miles de madres con crías que viajan más de diez mil kilómetros desde el Ártico. Desde 1988, es Reserva de la Biosfera de la UNESCO, y las pangas locales deben mantener una distancia de cien metros; muchas veces, son las propias ballenas quienes se acercan por curiosidad. Los campamentos de glamping limitan el número de visitantes diarios y colaboran con científicos que monitorean la salud de la población.

En Hawái, la isla de Maui se convierte en el lugar de nacimiento invernal de las jorobadas del Pacífico Norte. Entre diciembre y mayo, alrededor de doce mil ballenas llegan a reproducirse en las cálidas aguas del Canal Auau. La Pacific Whale Foundation opera con embarcaciones eléctricas casi silenciosas y destina todas sus ganancias a la investigación; además, sus naturalistas explican en tiempo real el comportamiento observado, convirtiendo cada salida en una clase magistral de biología marina.

En la costa este de Canadá, Terranova y Labrador ofrecen uno de los espectáculos más diversos del Atlántico. De junio a septiembre, Iceberg Alley alberga hasta veintidós especies diferentes, incluidas ballenas azules y jorobadas que practican técnicas de alimentación cooperativa. Las regulaciones canadienses exigen una distancia de doscientos metros para las especies más sensibles y el uso de hidrófonos para detectar si los animales están descansando o alimentándose, lo que ayuda a determinar si es adecuado acercarse o retirarse.

Alaska—especialmente el Parque Nacional Glacier Bay—es el único lugar en Estados Unidos donde los barcos deben apagar sus motores si una ballena se acerca a menos de quinientos metros. De mayo a septiembre, se pueden observar jorobadas realizando la espectacular técnica de alimentación con redes de burbujas, y las orcas residentes cazan focas. La población de jorobadas ha crecido de apenas cuarenta individuos en los años 60 a más de cuatrocientos gracias a la estricta protección del parque, un ejemplo de recuperación que emociona a quienes lo presencian.

En la costa oeste de EE. UU., Monterey Bay es el cañón submarino que atrae a las mayores ballenas azules jamás registradas. De abril a diciembre, y especialmente en verano, cientos de individuos se alimentan de krill a pocos kilómetros de la costa. La ciudad fue declarada la primera Área Patrimonial de Ballenas del mundo, y muchos operadores utilizan barcos híbridos o kayaks marinos guiados por biólogos marinos, ofreciendo una experiencia íntima y de bajo impacto.

En Québec, el Parque Marino Saguenay–San Lorenzo es el mejor lugar del Atlántico Norte para observar ballenas azules y belugas en la misma salida. De mayo a octubre, los zodiacs de casco rígido autorizados reducen la velocidad a diez nudos y mantienen una distancia de cien metros. Muchos de los guías son investigadores del GREMM, narrando en vivo los cantos captados por los hidrófonos y explicando cómo cada individuo tiene una firma acústica única, convirtiendo la excursión en una experiencia científica y emocional difícil de olvidar.

Selecciona el operador adecuado

Para garantizar que el avistamiento de ballenas sea respetuoso, es esencial elegir operadores certificados por Whale SENSE, Responsible Whale Watching o miembros de la Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks & Aquariums. Evitar empresas que prometan “nadar con ballenas” o “encuentros cercanos garantizados” es crucial, ya que estas prácticas están prohibidas en Estados Unidos y Canadá. Llevar binoculares, usar protector solar seguro para los arrecifes y recordar que un cambio de dirección o velocidad de una ballena es señal de estrés son pequeñas acciones que marcan la diferencia. Presenciar la cola de una jorobada elevándose al atardecer o escuchar el profundo canto de una ballena azul no es solo un privilegio efímero; es la oportunidad de ser, por unas horas, huéspedes silenciosos en su hogar.
