U.S. Deploys Troops for Jungle Training in Panama After Decades-Long Pause

Strategic Manoeuvre Signals Renewed Regional Focus and Joint Security Efforts

The United States Department of Defense has quietly sent U.S. ground troops— including soldiers and Marines— to conduct jungle warfare training in Panama, marking the first large-scale deployment of its kind in decades. Newsroom Panama +2 SOFX +2 The training is centered at the Base Aeronaval Cristóbal Colón in Colón, Panama, formerly known as Fort Sherman. The curriculum, which began earlier this year and is expected to expand in 2026, includes survival skills, navigation through dense tropical terrain, and small-unit tactics tailored to Central American jungles. Newsroom Panama +1 U.S. military officials say the training is not intended for a specific mission in Venezuela, despite the jungle terrain’s resemblance and ongoing tensions in the region. Nevertheless, regional analysts view the deployment as a strategic signal: Washington is doubling down on Central America as part of a broader push to counter illicit flows, strengthen alliances, and deter adversarial influence. Newsroom Panama +1 Panama’s involvement in the programme serves multiple domestic and international purposes. For Panama, it offers an opportunity to strengthen its security forces, especially in the Darién Gap—a region long plagued by illicit trafficking, armed groups and migration flows. Simultaneously, the collaboration provides the U.S. with access to training environments that mimic possible future operational theatres. Critics and civil society in Panama have raised concerns about sovereignty, given memories of past U.S. military presence and the symbolic weight of the Panama Canal. Though the Panamanian government has stated the arrangement does not equate to permanent bases or loss of control, public sentiment remains cautious. AP News +1 Defense analysts point out that jungle training is unique among military environments. The terrain is unforgiving—heat, humidity, insects, dense vegetation, and limited logistics challenge even the best-prepared forces. The course emphasises adaptability, interdisciplinarity and interoperability between partner nations. One recent description detailed the three-week program: phase one covers survival and shelter building; phase two introduces tactical movement and waterborne operations; phase three culminates with patrol missions and endurance tests under pressure. DVIDS +1 The timing is notable. The U.S. is also increasing its military footprint in the Caribbean and Pacific, focusing on regions near Venezuela and Colombia as part of its counter-narcotics and strategic deterrence agenda. With China and Russia deepening ties in Latin America, Panama’s location—adjacent to the canal and at the crossroads of hemispheric commerce—gives extra weight to the cooperation. Newsroom Panama +1 Panama retains veto power over operations on its soil, and both governments emphasise that the training is “temporary and rotational.” Still, the emergence of this partnership signals a renewed era of U.S.-Panama military synergy, with potential influence on broader regional security dynamics.
